I'm looking to adopt a purebred blue Chow from the pound here but thought I'd ask if anyone has experience with them. Thanks ahead of time.

Oh, lucky you. I love chows. I would search for breeders online. You should find all the info you need. That is what we did before we got our first Seal Point. I wanted to know behavior and health issues. It really helped.

Chows are a ONE owner pet! They are VERY aggressive, VERY short tempered! They make good watch dogs...just an FYI, you might want to check with you home owners insurance policy to see if it covers dog bites if you plan on getting it, personally, I would stay away from a Chow, like I said, this is just my opnion!

I had a friend in Virginia who had a Chow. When I would visit he would just tell me to stay away from him. I finally made up with the dog but was always on guard.

For those who offered the advice, thanks! i truly appreciate it. I went to look at him yesterday and he was probably the most blase dog i've ever encountered. he wasnt interested in anything or anyone. So I got this big boy instead. he goes home with me today!

He weighs anywhere from 75 to 100 pounds and will be a great trailmate as well as a buddy for Roxy!

thanks! the humane society folks said he's a mastiff/rottweiler mix. but who really knows?

Yes, he looks like that combo.

I think Hienz57s (mutts) are the best dogs by far. I think you'll be happier and better off with this dog, I haven't heard any good stories about Chows only bad ones.

A friend of a friend got sick and had to go into a nursing home. She had a purebred chow. We thought we would keep the dog for security. I tried and tried to make friends to no avail. Everytime I got near it he would try to attack me. The first night he broke the chain and tried to break into the house. We put a desk against the door, and I put all my weight against it. The next night the same thing and the following night we had all kinds of furniture because the dog finally broke the lock and the wood on the side. The next night he finally broke into the house and we ran to the bedroom and put one of those security sticks against the door and called our friend to come get the dog. I do believe he was trying to protect the house but I think he would have killed us both.

Blase isn't a bad thing at all in a dog. When Dave and I were looking for a second dog, we knew we needed a low-key one to go with the hyper old dog. Maggie perked up with training and socialization, but never lost my favorite behavior: she's the "snuggiest" dog I've ever known. The old dog accepted her immediately and they get along beautifully. Walking them together really made a big difference in both of them. Chica calmed down, and Maggie gained confidence. Win-win.

Don't you just love rescuing any dog? I can't imagine going to a breeder and paying hundreds of dollars when you can probably find one through a rescue organization. As for Chows, I've seen them both ways: ignored, left in the yard and anti-social; and some really low-key and friendly. So much depends on the owner's ability to socialize the dog.

in retrospect, i'm glad i got Buster! he is a sterling dog. he loves to walk but doesnt yank your arm off (one of my arms is already a bit longer from Roxy pulling SO hard on the leash, lol)

you should have seem him perk up when Jeff brought the beer bottles out! he knew what that was and jeff gave him some in a saucer. it disappeared!

there were a few moments of dissention between the dogs at first, but they're getting along better now. i'll take them both for a hike down the canyon tonight after work.

the consensus so far is that he's a rottweiler/chow mix.

Wow, what a wonderful face and I love the brendal coloring and the white blaze on his chest. Buster looks like he'd lick you to death.

we just found out that Buster is a saint bernard/rottweiler mix. wow. and he has turned out to be one of the best dogs we've ever had!!! Roxy, our other baby, is actually learning good habits from him.

I dont see the picture?? Has it been taken off? I rescued an Astralian Shepherd and love her something awful!!!
