Hubby, the kids and I drove out to beach yesterday to watch it go up. It was a picture perfect take off. Love that rumbling it makes. Truley awesome, I know my kids will always rember that. We watch it all the time from here in Orlando, but alot different while on the beach a few miles aways.
Go Atlantis !!!!!!!!!!!

The launches are so awesome to see in person. I wasn't at STS-117, but I was fortunate enough to be on KSC property, right across the lagoon from the pads, for the previous 3 launches (starting with STS-114 - Return to Flight). We're hoping to get tickets to Endeavour's launch currently scheduled for Aug. If any of you have the chance, you ought to get to KSC for a launch before 2010 - the end of the shuttle era.

It will be docking in about 35 minutes for those interested. It will be on Nasa TV.

There is a major problem on the ISS. Most of the computers are down. This includes Oxygen and Power. Atlantis is powering the entire Space Station. The mission of Atlantis has been extended 2 days until 13 days. Orbit has been disturbed, but Atlantis is working on stabilizing orbit. They are thinking as a last resort to unman the ISS. Atlantis will leave and Cosmonauts will leave on Hoyuz, an emergency shuttle. When Atlantis leaves, it is hard to know what the ISS will do, there is a possibility of it going out to space, or even crashing into earth, however both are unlikely. This is the first time computers in space have crashed. The ISS has 56 days of air, if it is not powered up.

What a mess.
They came back up for 7 minutes today and they thought it was 1996. Yikes.
First they are worried about the shuttle's tiles and now this.

They still have to worry about the Solar Arrays and sewining the cloth that came loose during blast off.

I realize that space travel is inherently dangerous, but you'd think we could do a little better than this. We've been having mechanical problems on nearly every mission lately. If the ISS does permanently fail, talk about a waste of money.

From the latest news conference:
Guidance and Navigation computers are on and off right now. The computers are Russian, so Russians will be doing much of the repairs. The cause is not completely known, but the leading theory is in simple terms, Solar or Radiative Noise. This noise may be radio waves or other waves from distance space. They hope to have it fixed in a few days.
On another topic, the Atlantis mission is actually ahead of schedule. They are scheduling extra tasks to be done.

The ISS made it through the worst the Sun could throw at it a few years ago-I can't beleive that few few minor Solar hiccups are causing the problem.

Nothing ventured nothing gained. I work at Kennedy Space Center and I can tell you that more goes RIGHT than wrong. Yes, there are issues, but if you can tell me one project that DOESNT have them I am all ears.

This just in......NOT a good thing. I expect that we will be seeing some of the "Big Wigs" out here before it is all said and done/.
