INDIAN police forced a thief to gobble down 40 bananas in a few hours, hoping they would force him to excrete a gold necklace he had snatched and swallowed.

Sheikh Mohsin, 35, grabbed the 45,000-rupee ($1300) necklace from a woman in the eastern city of Kolkata yesterday and popped it into his mouth when police and local residents caught him.

“He denied swallowing it at all, but an X-ray conducted in a hospital revealed the necklace was very much in his stomach,” Ajay Kumar, a leading city detective, told Reuters.

Mohsin visited the lavatory three times early today and was also forced to vomit but the necklace has failed to appear.

Interesting methods, though I'm not sure I would want it back.

At $1300.00 I would want it back but he would have to clean it, that should be part of his punishment.

last time i checked, it could be a while to get any physical evidence if he ate 40 bananas. an over-indulgence in that fruit definitely slows things down a little. a little chocolate ex-lax may be in order....

more than 10 bananas a day can cause constipation as well as negative side effects due to excessive potassium intake.

I'm against forcing him to eat anything to speed up or slow down his digestive tract. Simply hold him in custody and wait for nature to take it's course.

I'm against stealing as well. Note that I said "hold him in custody" I did NOT say to let him go. As to his punishment, that should be determined in one place and one place ONLY, a court of law. The police can hold him in custody, which they should, the prosecutors can indict him for the theft, which they should, and the courts can mete out an apropriate punishment in line with their laws, which they should. None of this is allowing him to get away with stealing.

Nope, the courts should sentence him to jail time for his crime. The police role isn't to inflict punishment, their job is to capture the criminals, and gather evidence against the perp.

they are gathering evidence

If the criminal did not want to go through with this, prehaps he should not have stole the necklace

Totally agree with that statement.
And BTW bananas do clog you up. Thats what the doctors tell you to feed a child who has the runs and or has been puking.

Forcing him to eat bananas or laxatives isn't necessary to gather evidence. Whatever he swallowed will come out on it's own. One only needs to hold him in custody and wait for that to happen. In addition they were able to gather the evidence simply by x-raying them, which they have done. I have no problem with the X-ray, or putting him in jail for his crime, but I don't think that it's apropriate to mess with a person's bodily functions. The only exception to this being when a person is sentenced, in a court of law, to death, and only for the worst crimes. This one doesn't qualify.

So you advocate torture as a reasonable punishment for petty theft?

If this had occurred in the United States it would be unconstitutional. Thankfully it did not.

Heh. I was being facetious.

There are places in the world that one could expect much more severe punishment for this type of crime than eating some fruit, and without 'due process'.
