There is nothing that makes me FUME like a "Backyard breeder" breeding a so called family pet for "Puppies for profit!" I wrote a letter to the editor of the local paper and I am the "Featured Guest Editor!" and Michelle wrote a letter also and hers was printed!! Check out the comments at the bottom of each article, shows ya what kind of mentality lives up here in Bubba and Jethro LAND

Wow, Dennis. I hadn't thought of it that way. Yes we are guilty of having a couple litters of puppies, putting an ad in the paper and selling them. We probably had a total of 5 litters over 10 years. In most cases we ended up giving some to friends. There were a couple cases where we didn't get a good feeling about the prospective owner and we told them that all the puppies were promised. It wasn't all that lucrative. I'll tell you though, our dogs are close-knit members of our family - they share our house and our beds with us. As it turns out, the dog in the picture at the left is the grandson of our older female. A friend of a friend took one of the puppies, and at one point, when we were ready for another, we networked back to these people and bought him. Now that you brought it up, I wonder if any of our pups did end up in the SPCA. I sure hope not. We are done with that now, anyway. The female that had the litters is "in retirement" at our daughters house, and our other female is spayed.

I'd like to think that we don't fit the profile that you described. We just decided to let our beloved pet have some puppies. I wouldn't say that we were exactly running a business.

I have heard alot of the good pure bred breeders no longer sell the pups but rather foster them out for a fee (I think that is what they call it). This way they have control over the care of that pup. They are in contact with the foster parents every few months to make certain they still have the dog and that they are taking care of the pup as a family member. If not - they can remove or sue for the removal because of the contract they signed. If they wish to sell the dog they must notify the true owner and they will take care of it. My sister and her husband have bought 6 or 7 pups this way over the years. These are responsible breeders to me.
