Carly Simon to Auction Off Song's Secret
Fri Aug 1,12:51 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) — If you really want to know who Carly Simon (news) was thinking about when she wrote "You're So Vain," prepare to get out your checkbook.

Simon, 58, tells People magazine in its Aug. 4 issue that she plans to auction off the answer.

But there's a catch: The winner has to sign an agreement never to tell anyone.

The song, which was a No. 1 hit in January 1973, has been rumored to be about Mick Jagger (news), Warren Beatty (news), Cat Stevens (news), Kris Kristofferson (news) and James Taylor (news). But Simon has steadfastly refused to reveal the identity of the song's subject until now.

The auction will raise money for Martha's Vineyard Community Services.

I had heard it was James Taylor her then hubby. I think this is another stupid Hollywood joke. Why not reveal?

Wonder who would pay money to know this and then not be able to tell....

I've always heard it was Warren Beatty and then I had heard it was Mick Jagger. I find it hard to believe that it would be James Taylor. Even though he had a major drug problem, which would tend to make anyone self-centered, I can't see him flying off in his Lear-jet to see the "total eclipse of the sun" or betting on horses in Saratoga. It doesn't sound like JT.

I'll Bet Cha Think This Auction Is About You

Every summer, on the island that Carly calls home, a charity Possible Dreams auction is held wherein celebrities offer services and events that couldn't be duplicated anywhere else - all to benefit the Community Services of Martha's Vineyard.

In the past, Carly has donated a Dream Dance that raised $85,000. In 1993, she agreed to satisfy two competing bidders with separate private performances at her home that added a total of $162,000 to the Auction tally. In 2001, she offered a Dream Recording Session that ultimately fetched $55,000 from one of her many devoted fans.

This year, Carly will be not only be offering to make sandwiches, pour vodka and sing You're So Vain for the highest bidder - but will also tip the scales by offering to divulge for the first time ever (and to only one person IF they agree to sign and abide by a confidentiality agreement) the secret behind who the song "You're So Vain" was written about.

I chose James Taylor for the reason you said Steph.
Carly supported him and his drug problems. I also read somewhere that she wrote the song for him.

UPDATE:

NBC Honcho Pays $50,000 to Learn Who's 'So Vain'
Tue Aug 5, 1:19 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Carly Simon (news) finally will reveal who the mysterious subject of her 1972 mega-hit "You're so Vain" is to raise money for a Martha's Vineyard charity, but to only one person for a winning bid of $50,000,

Actor Warren Beatty (news) has long led the speculation over who was the subject of the song that hit No. 1 in December 1972, though Stones lead singer Mick Jagger (news) and her husband at the time, James Taylor (news), have been mentioned as contenders.

On the NBC "Today Show" on Tuesday, NBC Sports President Dick Ebersol said he had won the bidding at Monday's Possible Dreams Auction to benefit the Community Services of Martha's Vineyard, where Simon makes her home.

Ebersol said he would ante up $50,000 to learn Simon's secret but the songstress is requiring him to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Simon, 58, once dated movie star Beatty, and Jagger sang back-up on the song.

Ebersol said Simon told him he could offer a clue as to the identity of the mystery man. "The letter 'E' is in the person's name."

Yeah - you know you might be right JQ. I think its a publicity stunt if I have ever seen one. Wonder how much longer she will wait and auction off the name again. If I was the man who bought it - I would have her sign an agreement she never is to sell the name or secret again.

Even Ebersol (the winning bidder's name) has an E in it.

Carly Simon, however, does not. Wonder what her middle name is. I looked her up on IMDB.com but the bio doesn't have it.

I guess we can rule out Adam Ant, Tim Conway, and Placido Domingo. :)
