Should students be allowed to use profanity against their teachers?

I cannot believe this was today's poll on FoxNews.com. Is this actually an issue? In most cases, if you’re a responsible professional, you’re not gonna use it on the job, so why should kids be allowed to use it at school….against teachers, no less? Sure, some people use it in an informal setting and in anger (or passion?).

Duck. I had to go to foxnews.com and see that for myself lol. No offense intended.:). At least so far 98% of those polled have said no. Like you said, I can't believe this is an issue. When I was in school if my parents had been told I swore at a teacher I still wouldn't be able to sit down:):)

I agree, what an odd poll issue. No surprise the poll as of a few hours ago was 98% to 2%.

One would think that TV Land ("Nick at Nites" spinoff network) would carry "The Facts of Life" reruns.

Had a whole bit about this on fox news today and it just infuriated me.. Had a joker on there saying it is against "free speach" ARRRGGGGGG Got in a huge argument with a co worker today while watching it in the break room.. What is wrong with everyone??? How can this even be up for debate... Just totaly blows my mind.. It all started because a studen got suspended for cursing at his teacher or princaple, and his parents are suing the school board for infringing on his rights.. What the heck is wrong with them.. Way to teach your kids... So ignorant.. No wonder there kid is a disrespectfull litlle punk... There is nothing more important to me than RESPECT... If there is one thing that my child will learn its R-E-S-P-E-C-T...

Hope this ticks everyone off just as much as I... After all you are paying for this rediculous case to be tried..

ChaDTM80. I agree bigtime with you. What the heck is the matter with people?. Next thing you know some kid will strike a teacher and the parents of the kid will sue the teacher saying the teachers face hurt their kids hand .

I hope that family gets laughed right out of court! Then they get sued for pursuing a frivolous lawsuit and their lawyer ought to hung up by his tongue!

If I had of cussed at a teacher I wouldn't have worried about a lwasuit. My parents would have killed me and then grounded me for good measure!!!!

I have always set high standards...as a teacher...as a parent, too. The F word is among a list I still proclaim to be off limits within the house...and, except for last Christmas eve (I hope it never repeats itself again), it has remained that way.

Setting an example? My mouth is generally pretty tame, and at work these days the language has settled down considerably from my early days. I guess sending a couple of angry pressmen home for a few hours for their language made an impact.

Free speech is exactly that. But gaining respect and giving it back requires an appreciation for what is acceptable and what is not on both sides.

A good teacher will surely not be confronted with such problems if he or she sets the right tone to begin with. A tone of respect.

I know of many times where students got so mad at teachers in the 8th grade, some got suspended, 1 got exspelled. Many got out of school/in-school suspensions for 1-5 days. One time a teacher got into a verbal fight w/ a student, and she came back saying "She(the student) could go to hell for all I care." Direct quote. Tisk, tisk.

I was never brave or stupid enough to curse a teacher. Getting my rear tanned with dad's belt THEN having my mouth washed out with soap by mom wasn't my idea of fun


BTW - Lisa Whelchel is a precious Christian lady. I hope and pray I'm fortunate enough to meet her someday. My sister did a couple years ago, and I'm so envious

One time did I get away with it in class - for 5 minutes straight I cursed and yelled at a teacher, in front of the whole class and very loudly too (but not quite at the top of my lungs), after he set me off about something petty (what it was I forget now). I never got a referral or detention either . The rest of the times I got in big trouble .

In my day....this was grounds for immediate suspension (none of this sissy ISS they do now), and possibly expulsion.

Needless to say, it didn't happen all to often, and this was the 70's!!

Absolutely not!!! A student must show respect to his elders and to others.

Yup. I have her album from a few years back (well, okay...almost 20 years ago). She and Steve (her hubby) are moving back to TX and she was scheduled to make a booksigning appearance in Katy, TX on 7/26. I was going to go, but then I was invited to a friend's wedding and was just a tad more important.

Personally, I feel that kids are less respectful of their elders today than they were when I was a kid. I think a lot of it has to do with the kids having little or no fear of being severely punished. Being "grounded to your room" is hardly punishment when there is a nice TV, VCR or DVD player and a computer in the kid's room (and probably a phone too). And of course spanking a child is considered "abuse" these days. As a child, being grounded to my room was terrible (nothing really for me to do there) and of course my parents had no qualms about spanking me silly if I were to curse or talk back to them.

Jct.. your dead on. I think alot of kids nowdays do have less respect for their elders. I was grounded and spanked when the need arose and I don't consider my parents child abusers. I am sorry but time out is for sports not disciplining your child.

I shudder to think what I would have been like if my Mom hadn't took me down a notch or two. I remember the taste of soap, the sting of a switch and the red stripes from the belt. Yes I've even had a smack across the back with a bed slat. Not that I'm an angel mind you but I do respect my elders.It didn't do me a bit of harm. Though some people carry it way too far.

There has to be some consequence for bad actions!!! You don't even have to spank that often if your just consistent with your discipline. Consistency is the key!!!! If you start a child from the beginning with them knowing that if they do something bad, something bad will happen to them, you have it made!!! Just the threat or memory of that spanking or that uncomfortable discipline will trigger a positive response from the child. IMHO
