This happened here in Beaumont...not something you hear everyday.

Accidents can happen anywhere, and that probably wasn't more apparent anywhere else in Beaumont Monday than at Fire Station Number 4..
The chief's dormitory room caught fire.
It may have been hard for Kevin Reed to picture, had he not witnessed it himself.

Kevin Reed/Neighboring Business Owner: "I thought it was pretty funny that the fire station was on fire."
But it was only funny in the ironic sense.

Chief Micky Bertrand/Beaumont Fire Department: "It's a very rare instance, I will say that."
Around 2:30 Monday afternoon a 9-1-1 call was made from Beaumont's Fire Station Number 4 at Lucas and Gladys.

Kevin Reed:
"We were washing cars and we just saw smoke coming from the building."
And adding to the irony was the fact that there were no firefighters here when the fire started.

Chief Micky Bertrand:
"There's asbestos clean up being done."
So firefighters were relocated to another station. Chief Bertrand says an infrared machine being used by two workers in the asbestos clean up ignited a cleaning solvent workers were using to lift tile off a dormitory room.
When one of the workers was unable to extinguish the flames himself, they ran out of the building and placed the emergency call.

Chief Micky Bertrand:
"The workers did exactly what they should have done."
One of the workers suffered minor smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene. Officials say there was minimal damage to the dorm room in this fire that will be ruled accidental.

Chief Micky Bertrand:
"This was the typical response. No extra engines because it was a fire station. I'm glad nobody was injured."
The pride of some firefighters may have suffered a little, though. But the owners of a new car wash across the street from Fire Station Number 4 offer this vote of confidence.

Kevin Reed/Neighboring Business Owner:
"We just moved here. We've only been here a week and this is a lot of excitement for the first week, but we're happy to be here. We still feel safe."
Chief Bertrand says he's been here 29 years, and prior to his arrival there was a fire at Station Number 7.
In that instance, firefighters forgot to turn off a stove when they left to respond to an alarm.
