It's that time of year again! I just had mine! Ouch!

We're lucky that we get someone to come to our shop and give them. There's about 15 of us that take it and a couple that won't take the shot.

Got mine a week ago. Started a thread about it but it's now buried. There's a latex allergy risk this year. If have this allergy, make sure you can get this year's shot.

Ya know Mama its funny that you posted this thread. I work at and elderly health and rehab center, and they have a sign up sheet for flu shots, (we get them free), but I'm scared to get one. I've never had one and I heard that you can get the flu the 1st time you get one. So I'm up in arms about it. I dont know if I should get one or not???????? :?:

Cause right now I cant afford to be sick and be out of work.......but if it's gona help protect me in the future,, then thats another thing.....sooooo :?: :?: what do yall think??

I used to get a low grade fever the first couple of times but now my arm just gets sore. But i just move my arm around and it feels better. I'd rather have a day of discomfort than a week or more of feeling like heck and missing all that work.

I got my flu shot on Wednesday. Last year I didn't get the shot and got the flu. It lasted 3 weeks and I was miserable. I'm a photographer and have lots of weddings to do this winter and cannot be down sick so the shot is a must for me. Also, the nurse told me that you can't get the flu from the shot because it's not activated flu or something like that.

we get them free here in Ontario also, provided you have your Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card, but i've never ever been for one, but my family gets them yearly. I inevitably will get the flu anyways at least once over the winter, i've learnt to live with it.

I've never had one and I'm not sure if I want one either. Marty's Mom would get it and she would get sick from it (i.e. the flu). She stopped getting the shots for a few years until last year, and then she ended up with pneumonia, then shingles. Granted, the woman is 85, but that is the part of the population that's the most vulnerable.

There's a lot of flu shot clinics around my area and even at work, but I don't think I'm going to get one.

All I know is I had a very severe case of the Flu, back in 1993. Fever lasted 8 days, severe cough lasted 3 weeks, my chest felt like an elephant was sitting on it. Later my internist said I was one of a handful of his patients he was watching carefully (I had 3 exams with him over that 3 week period). After it was over with, he admitted I came very close to devoloping into pneumonia (sp?) and being hospitalized. I had young children then (2 and 5) and I had to sleep in the guest room while the cough was the worst, coughing into my pillow so as not to wake up a 2 y.o.! When you are that sick, you do not want a toddler awake at 3 a.m. During the day all I could do was lie on the couch while my kids played nearby. They'd poke me and ask - are you awake Mommy? Of course I was, I would just close my eyes. Who can sleep with all that poking anyway? Somehow I got thru those 3 weeks but it wasn't easy. Anyway, I had missed the cut off date for the shot so my internist said never to miss the shot in the future and to get one each Fall, they build on the previous year's shot. Not sure what that means but I've never skipped a flu shot since 1994!

I went to the Doctors today and she asked if I wanted one. I told her she was lucky that I was being such a good patient and taking my BP pills. NOOOO thank you. I'll pass on the shots and all other stuff.

My daughter does all the nagging. "Mom, you need to get one." "No, Tracy, I'm not putting anything foreign into my body." .......... Now while my mind went on a little sexual field trip........lol , my daughter continued, "You sound just like Grandma!" I wanted to tell her that I wasn't thinking like Grandma. ROTFLMBO

Reverse nagging....I love it Karan!

Well sometimes you just have to allow others to make up their own minds. My husband is this way - if getting a flu shot is as easy as having a rep from his insurance company give them out at work AND they are covered by our insurance, then he'll get one. If it means stopping on his way home from work at a local pharmacy, eh, he'll take his chances. LOL This goes back to the year flu shots were so scarce. Somehow I managed to get one that year, I just merely asked at Krogers how available they actually were, the tech almost whispered, do you want one? I said sure! She said fill this out quick and on the spot, I got a flu shot. And bought a lotto ticket on the way home. he he No, I didn't win a cent but I didn't get the flu either!

Miss Mary - I can totally understand if you had it before that you don't want to take that chance again.

I wonder if it's like bronchitis and pneumonia - if you've had it once, you're suseptible to getting it again? I know that there are different strains of the bug.

I haven't taken a flu shot in years. It's been quite a few years (*knock on wood) since
I've had the flu. The flu shot that's given for each year is to keep you from getting a few
of the strains of flu that the CDC thinks will be the most prevalent for that season. It won't
keep you from acquiring any of the other strains going around.

And, Miss Mary, don't listen to Chad about throwing margaritas at Kathy - let's just
pour one and drink to good health! Heck, the tequila may just be the key to keeping
the flu bug away! LOL! :ggreen:
