I think Dean will drop a couple of more MB and eek in as a minimun Cat-5 sometime this evening. Since there were concentric eyewalls reported a while ago it is possible Dean is going through another EWRC (how many has it been?).....MGC

According to MSNBC, it already is a Category 5.

I just got a MSNBC Breaking News Alert on my computer saying that according to the National Hurricane Center, Dean is now a Category 5.

It better start pulling north of Chetumal (at 18.5N) quickly, it is now only 200 miles away and coming in fast.....

They don't, they must have misinterpreted 155 mph for a Cat 5

It will be a 5 in a few months, but then it will not matter to most of the people.

MGC,
In order for Dean to go through another ERC, its outer eyewall would need to contract enough to cause the inner eyewall to begin collapsing. Considering Dean is deepening and they eye is warming, it appears the inner eyewall is getting stronger and not eroding. The presence of a double wind maxima does not mean an ERC is starting....the inner eyewall would need to begin collapse for that to occur....as long as the inner eyewall is strong Dean will deepen.

They were reporting 10 dead in Jamaica but having read 2 in most reports I would find that 10 to be overall (at least for now).

Acc to msnbc.com it says:

"National Hurricane Center says Dean 'very near' Category 5 strength"

Are you sure it said it actually is one?

Yes, I'm sure. I knew they were wrong, but that's what it said. Not surprised that it's been corrected though. I got it about 5-10 minutes before my post, because I hit submit, and then got up for a few minutes. When I came back, I had the "At least one new post has been made to this topic.... " message so it didn't go through when I thought it did.

WUnderground is wrong. Dean is not a 5 until the NHC says so.

I know it's not official... that was my point. MSNBC was jumping the gun with the alert. That's why I said, "according to MSNBC... "

The main secretary here has family in jamaica and they have reported only minor damage, at least to well built structures. That was a little NW of Kingston, I believe

Somewhere, someone tonight is gonna lose their life. And their family won't care if it was a cat4 or cat5 hurricane that caused it.
