Apparently they are in Eastern Time zone, but remain on Standard Time all year. No Daylight Savings time.

Local 13 said we were out of the clear, i nearly fell over. If they keep saying this and it takes a turn it could go south quick. Everyone needs to watch this.

Even if my thoughts are right and it is a Cat 3 right now, remember Katrina was also a Cat 3 at landfall with the exact same pressure - and look at the catastrophic destruction that took place. It would be NO reason to let the guard down at all.

something else to note, we have seen in the past that the pressure drops very quickly but the winds do not increase right away.. it seems to be delayed for whatever reason, so the winds have to "catch up" to the pressure drop.. i would be very suprised if they lowered the winds on the next advisory even if the hunters dont find stronger than 150mph... certainly if the pressure reamins near 920mb..

The issue of this being a Cat3 right now should not surprise people....Folks its not weakening....notice the pressure is DOWN 10 mbs and not rising.....

Folks its just an ERC, and that is anything but good news....if It finishes before dawn itll have the highest THCP in the basin to bomb out.

katrina was weakening though.. the pressure was rising and you were getting dry air into the system.. you can not compare the 2.. this is a developing storm still specially with the recent pressure drop..no way cat 3..winds will cath up

Lets wait until they make a couple more passes though the center before trying to see what the wind speed is

Agreed. While New Orleans can almost go all clear, anything from about Lafayette to Belize City is possible at this point.

Here's news on curfew, evacuations and airport closing times from Storm Carib, one of the Jamaica correspondents:
---

We should start experiencing Tropical Storm Conditions
at 3a.m .

The Commisioner of Police has implemented a curfew
which started at 6pm this evening and will run until
6pm Monday.

The prime minister has issued mandatory evacuation
order .Persons along coastal areas particularly the
South Coast will be urged to evacuate to shelters this
will begin this afternoon. This could mean evacuating
thousands of people in the next few hours.

The Sangster International Airport (MKJS)will be
closed as of 8:00pm Saturday evening, August 18.

The Norman Manley International will be closed at 11pm
tonight.

hurricanes are like the stock market, they dont move in straight lines and they need to breathe sometimes before advancing
