30 knts very far to the south of the circulation. I can't until they get to the center.

Well if they are gathering high resolution data for the HWRF model not all the data will be passed along in the Obs right? We have quiscat data for surface wind speed and direction and dvorak satellite interpretation etc. etc. I suppose temperature layer analysis could be done better at the mid levels with the recon plane but what exactly does the HWRF model need?

We should get data from the Center shortly.

Luis or Derek, what kind of wind reduction do we use for the altitude the plane is flying?

Derek knows better as he has been up there in one of those NOAA ones.

Mr. Ortt did, I believe he said it was a test that involved better initializing the HWRF model with doppler radar data gathered in flight.

at this level, flight level winds are about equal to surface winds

I believe it is suspect, but I could be wrong.

I think it's real since there are 2 40 kts next to it.

So The FL winds are basically the surface winds without adjustment? Even taking the possibly suspect 49, if you took the 40, it would get you about 41mph at .9. Anything else required for the upgrade at 11pm or would that basically seal the deal?

I think suspect, other wind data from that ob does not support. Next pass ought to be the interesting one. Nice box flight plan.

Hmm? What are you referring to? There are two 40 kts and a 35 kt in the same ob. If it's suspect, then supporting evidence isn't the issue.

I think the real intensity at this moment is 40 kt unless new data comes in. I think the 49 kt is suspect (hence I am disregarding that for now), but the FL data seems to support 40 under the assumption the highest has not yet been sampled.

Flight level obs of 19 and 23 at the 40 and 49 would be suspect.
