CNN team arrives in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.– A CNN team leading by Anderson Cooper has arrived in the Dominican Republic with the goal of traveling to Port-Au-Prince following the devastating 7.0 earthquake in Haiti.

The team also includes CNN reporters Chris Lawrence, Gary Tuchman and Junstine Redman, as part of a crew of 20 who arrived at the Las Americas Iternational Airport in Santo Domingo.

They will travel to Port-au-Price via small planes and helicopters given the all-flight cancel of Haiti's main international airport.

The CNN team is the first and most numerous to arrive in the country for reporting on the catastrophic situation in Haiti.

Tuchman said they're waiting for clearance for flying near the Dominican border or Port-au-Prince itself.

I think it is very important that each of us reaches out and tries to help in whatever way we can.
I know on St. Maarten there are already people organizing fundraisers.
I have some links for donating if anyone wants to do so.

this one lists various possibilities.
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/201 ... c=fb&cc=fp

and this one is the ICRC in Haiti, working there since 1994.
I donated to this one because they are there already with their organization..

Let's not just talk about this tragedy. Let's do something to help!

It seems after the major earthquake (the easternmost point) the strike-slip fracture zone kept fracturing westward.

We are "virtual volunteers". We create online lists of "needs" and
"available services" for disasters.

See what we've done for the Haiti disaster (so far) here:

http://www.citizencommandcenter.org/con ... preset=104

Right now, we are looking for:

- local news organizations with online reports
- shelters and places where people can get food/medical care
- the "safe registry" where people can register that they are safe (the Red
Cross does this in the US)
Please help us connect with the folks on the ground, so we can list the
places they are operating out of...

It will help direct incoming supply/volunteer resources...

- Ham Radio operators from the Salvation Army are standing by on frequency for Haiti relief
By "Marti Brown" <captmarti at netzero.com>

Hi Gert,

Don’t know if this will help anyone or not in your group but the Salvation Army has activated its SATERN net (Salvation Army Team Emergency Network) and is monitoring the following frequencies:

7.265.0 MHz LSB and 3.977.7 MHz LSB evening and night.

When the 20 meter band opens back up later today we will be listening and ready to assist on 14.267 MHz USB The actual frequency will vary up or down depending upon noise and so forth on the band.

For the first 72 hours or so, they will be taking disaster relief traffic from the area. In the interim, they have a health and welfare request section on their web site where folks can go to request information on family members in the affected area. Here is the web site:

Hi All;

We are located 90 miles north of Port au Prince. Definitely felt the initial quake, houses were swaying. In our area here in the north however there was no significant damage.

Reports are of massive casualties in the capital, it is essentially destroyed.

Please pray and help in any way you can.

Looks like another quake has been felt but this time in Aruba...maybe in response of the Big one from Haiti? It's always worrying  for all, especially those who lived in the Lesser Antilles after the huge activity of Volcano Soufrière (increasing emissions today) :rarrow: viewtopic.php?f=67&t=107244&hilit=&start=80

Here is the report from a correspondant from Aruba...

Hi to all,

It has been a long time, but the computers are working again.

Last night when we went to bed after looking at CNN about Haiti, who could imagine that I would wake up at around 4.10 in the morning by a rumbling sound that came closer and closer.

Normally I don’t hear anything on account of the airco.

Suddenly the house was shaking and I heard some noises in the house.

Then I realized that we had an earth/sea quake too.

In the morning my daughter called, who lives in Bringamossa, that they too were woken up by the quake.

She had the news on her Black Berry saying that it was 4.2 on the scale.
Bought the news paper, but nothing saying about it.

Even the tv stations don’t mention anything about it.

But we are going to find out what has happened and I will notice you all.
Greetings
Roy

El Salvador's government has expressed solidarity with the victims of the earthquake and has asked the international community to help haitian victims, although the government of El Salvador has not confirmed if any kind of help will be send to Haiti: http://www.elsalvador.com/mwedh/nota/nota_completa.asp?idCat=6329&idArt=4424307

I'm not sure if El Salvador's government will send any help to Haiti because we're just recovering from the disastrous floods and mudslides in november, but I think that there are other so many ways to help so I'm hoping for our authorities to do something for our haitian neighbors like other countries helped us back in november.

Local newspaper in El Salvador have also informed about 13 salvadoran officers members of the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti are still missing: http://www.laprensagrafica.com/el-salvador/judicial/85566-pnc-sin-noticias-de-sus-13-oficiales-en-mision-de-paz-en-haiti.html

Easily. The number of homeless will be in the millions. This is as horrific as the 2004 tsunami, except centralized in one location.

I hope we don't have hangups delivering aid the way we did after Nargis in 2008, in Myanmar.

And what will happen to the thousands if not hundreds of thousands of displaced people? From what the Prime minister said earlier on cnn, we don't even know for sure if the govt is up and running. Catastrophic on so many levels.

May end up as a total failed state if there is no government. May not have any choice but to have a foreign total military occupation of the country just to coordinate basic relief efforts
