Volcano is inflating, temperature increasing, CO2 emission increasing, more quakes.

All adds up to a pending eruption.

I am worried about the other volcanoes in the area, especially the deformation at La Palma.

Maybe see activity there in the coming months / years?

Is there a history, like on Iceland, where one volcanic eruption on those islands, triggered another?
Same was said about Eyjalladifficultname, Grimsvotn and Katla on Iceland.

I was wondering if a possible new eruption would create a complete new island over there? Or is that option ruled out?

Katla always erupts after Effy.

I'll try and dig up some references.

Realtime seismic activity... lots of activity between 10-11... calmed down now... probably preparing for a new seismic swarm.

Scientific paper reveals massive historic Tenerife volcano flank collapse

One of the most intriguing but poorly understood landslide types is that of the volcanic flank collapse.

In a volcanic flank collapse, the side of a volcano fails, usually catastrophically, generating a landslide.

These slides can be really big – tens or even hundreds of cubic kilometers – and they can travel huge distances along the sea floor.

Government issues volcanic eruption alert on Spanish Canary Island

By Associated Press, Published: October 9

MADRID — The regional government of the Spanish Canary Island of El Hierro has issued a volcanic eruption alert following almost 10,000 small tremors recorded in the past three months.

The government posted a yellow alert — second level in a scale of four — Sunday and closed some hillside roads and a tunnel to avoid possible injury by falling rocks.

The island’s 11,000 residents have been told to monitor communications by the civil protection authority. The island was shaken late Saturday by a 4.3-magnitude quake. Seismic activity began in the area on July 17.

Like all the Canary Islands, El Hierro was formed by volcanic activity. It has some 500 volcanic cones.

Iron recorded a submarine eruption at 7 kilometers from the coast

Seismic monitoring services have been a small submarine eruption at 1,200 meters deep at sea seven miles from El Hierro .

The phenomenon is ongoing and has occurred at 10.43 (local time) on the Sea of Calm and represents an abrupt change in seismic process as it has paralyzed for weeks tremors felt in the Canary Islands , as reported by experts to Canary Autonomic Radio.

As reported Canarias7, four ships have been alert to the maritime authorities of the existence of volcanic activity south of La Restinga and about 500 meters deep.

This same media reports that authorities have suspended all diving activities on the island .

If confirmed, this eruption, it would be the first of which is recorded in Spain since 1971 , when the volcano Teneguía emerged on the island of La Palma, Canary Islands too.

NO confirmation about the eruption, only based on tremor signals. Media "tremors" spreading chaos....

The president of the Cabildo de El Hierro, Alpidio Armas, has confirmed the existence of an underwater volcanic eruption 5 kilometers south of La Restinga and the Director General of Security and Emergency of the Canary Islands, Juan Santana, confirmed on Monday after the meeting in Valverde,''seismic signs indicate that there could be an eruptive phenomenon but scientists have yet to confirm it.''

Exciting :o
hope we wont miss this one with images, like they did of the Oregon coast earlier :D

anyway.. if it's really happening, will this make El Hierro larger in size or is it possible a new island can be created? (No idea how long that takes)

What about other volcanoes there, all quiet?

IMPORTANT UPDATE 16:13 UTC : The local council of El Hierro has confirmed that a submarine eruption is going on, but stressed that there is NO present danger for the El Hierro population. Following Alpidio Armas, the Cabildo de El Hierro, the eruption occurs at 5 km to the south of La Restinga. Armas also said that the news is “very good” as the accumulated energy will decrease by the present eruption. Armas also said that visitors are invited to visit the island as the island itself is not dangerous … (ER: this is a very optimistic statement)

Update 10/10 – 11:59 UTC : A group of scientists equipped with special cameras is currently flying over the Las Calmas see to check whether the eruption did happen. As stated in the Important Update below, the news of the eruption comes from 4 ships and is not official as yet.

IMPORTANT UPDATE : Following the Spanish Newspaper El Mundo, a small submarine eruption has taken place 7 km out of the coast. The eruption occurred at 1200 meter below sea level. The eruption took place in the Las Calmas sea to the south of the island at 10.43 local time (09:43 UTC). We expect an official statement soon.
The news comes from 4 boats presently navigating in the Las Calmas sea. Authorities have suspended the ferry activities to and from the island following Canarias7, a Canary Island newspaper.
This eruption news still has to be confirmed by IGN
