Re: Eastern Caribbean seismic activity=5.8 inside Puerto Rico

#61 Postby bvigal » Sun May 16, 2010 8:44 am

It woke me up, but not quickly enough for me to realize WHY. I looked at the clock and went right back to sleep! Over the last 10 years, looking at quake lists for PR seismic area, it's quite common to see well over 100 per month. Having grown up on the New Madrid fault, I always feel comforted that the earth is "adjusting" regularly. This is totally non-scientific, only folk wisdom. It's been some time, though since we had anything over 5.5, and with Haiti this year, many folks are understandibly a bit nervous on the subject. ;-)

That is very good that the authorities in the islands are educating the people about what to do in case of a big earthquake. Here in PR also there have been making excercises to educated the public.About this early morning quake, the important news is that no casualties occured but some damage occured in some homes and roads so in general terms,Puerto Rico came out of this pretty good.

The epicenter was well away from Puerto Rico and it was deep (96km). That is why I didn't felt it in San Juan. The past quake months ago in western PR,I was awakened
