El Salvador seismic activity

#1 Postby Macrocane » Wed Jan 20, 2010 10:57 am

I created a thread about the January 18 Guatemala-El Salvador earthquakes a couple of days ago, but on this new topic I will post the data of every earthquake that is felt in El Salvador unless a strong or damaging earthquake occurs because in that case I will start a new thread.

Today at 08:42 (local time) a 4.6 magnitude earthquake was felt especially in the eastern part of the country, again the epicenter was located offshore in the subduction zone between Cocos and Caribbean Plates. Here is the data gave by the SNET:

Date: January 20 2010
Local Time: 08:42
Latitude (N): 12.632
Longitude (W): -88.369
Localization: 65 kilometers (40.6 miles) south of "Bocana La Chepona" in Usulutan department.
Depth: 14.6 km (9.1 miles)
Magnitude: 4.6
Intensity: II in San Salvador

Here is the link to the SNET: http://www.snet.gob.sv/ver/sismologia/monitoreo/sismos+sentidos/. The USGS didn't report it.

Longitude (W): -88.81

A new earthquake has been felt in El Salvador but this time the epicenter was not located in the subduction zone but in San Salvador, the capital. It's worth to mention that when an earthquake's epicenter is offshore in the subduction zone it is felt in the whole contry and the movement is horizontal, but when an earthquake's epicenter is located inland in a fault line the movement is vertical and it is felt mostly in the areas near the epicenter. Here is the data for this earthquake:

Date: January 25 2010
Local Time: 20:27
Latitude (N): 13.741
Longitude (W): -89.205
Location: San Salvador's metropolitan area.
Depth (km): 5.8 (3.6 miles)
Magnitude: 3.2
Intensity: III in San Salvador.

Longitude (W): -88.98
Location: 145 kilometers south of Costa del Sol beach, department of La Paz.
