Southern California Quake Swarm

#1 Postby alan1961 » Tue Jun 15, 2010 4:25 am

It has not took much to trigger this current quake swarm
in southern california since the 5.7 jolt last night, still as
long as the border area releases the energy moderately it
will delay a "big one".

I was in the 5.7 last night. I'm in Orange, CA right now, and at about 10pm local time. It was just a subtle rumbling here, but im sure they got shook up down to our south.

I don't think that this is a continuation of the Easter event, because it is bigger. There is a major alignment in early September. Earth is caught between Venus and Jupiter at the New Moon and the Full Moon, and Jupiter is at it's closest approach in 3,000 years. This could be a precursor to that. Fortunately it is not further north. I have been watching this area for about 4 years before I went back to college in January, and I can say that 204 earthquakes a week is a 5 year record. That last high count I have is around 140 or 160 as I remember.

Is it true all of these smaller quakes are a good thing in that they relieve the pressure for a big one?

I did a quick search on this question and found this.

Do all the small earthquakes relieve the stress so we won’t have as many big ones?

Yes, every earthquake relieves some stress in the Earth’s crust. However, due to the fact that earthquake magnitude is a logarithmic scale, the small earthquakes do not relieve enough stress to delay a big one by any significant amount. It turns out that a M7.0 releases about 30 times the amount of energy of a M6.0, which in turn releases 30 times the energy of a M5.0, which in turn releases 30 times the energy of a M4.0, and so forth. From this we can see that when we get down to the day-to-day magnitude M2’s & M3’s, the overall energy release is miniscule.

We actually observe a relationship between the number of earthquakes & their magnitudes. This is known as the Gutenberg-Richter relation, after it’s discoverers. Approximately, every time we go down in magnitude by a whole point, there are 10 times as many earthquakes. So, over a time period where we have a thousand M3’s, a hundred M4’s & ten M5’s, we would also expect to see one M6 possibly damaging earthquake. Viewed in this way, the small quakes look more like reminders that we live in Earthquake Country than they do stress relief mechanisms!

The quake count is upto 1375 a week. That is like 9 times higher than I've ever seen it.
