April 30, 2011 – PANAMA
A 6.0 earthquake has struck off the coast of Panama at the shallow depth of 10 km.
This, once again, affirms the warnings about the growing dangerous dynamism and tension around the Cocos Plate, Baja California and the Caribbean Plate.
In the meantime, heightened seismic activity has been detected around the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and recently with double quakes striking the Gulf of California, north of Baja.
Outside of the Pacific Ring of Fire, this is currently one of the most seismically-stressed regions on the globe.
Stay tuned…

GEOMAGNETIC STORM:
A solar wind stream hit Earth's magnetic field during the early hours of April 30th, sparking a high-latitude geomagnetic storm (slowly subsiding).
In the United States, auroras descended as far south as Marquette, Michigan.
Earth is inside a solar wind stream flowing from the indicated coronal hole.
The solar wind speed is high and gusty, and NOAA forecasters estimate a 40% chance of more geomagnetic activity during the next 24 hours.

Swarm of moderate quakes has started south of Keeler, CA.
So far biggest has been 4.5, all very shallow.
Key an eye on CA as solar wind speeds drop.
Possibility of a quake when below 350 km/sec. Currently at 500 km/sec.
IMF currently shifting to over CONUS.
A strong PC1 pulsation in all polarizations was seen at 3:00Z.

MODERATE EARTHQUAKE FELT IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA
EARTHQUAKE SUMMARY FOR MAY 03, 2011
Global seismicity was at relatively quiet levels today with the only widely felt event an M 5.0-5.3 in Taiwan. On the other hand seismicity in California increased. Light to moderate earthquakes occurred from Baja to northern California. A light earthquake was also felt in northern Georgia, U.S. today with M 2.5. The current swarm near Bangor, Maine also continued today with an additional five light earthquakes in that region. An earthquake antipodal to Maine in the area south of Australia also occurred today with M 5.1. This earthquake as well as those in Maine are occurring at the fourth node (90 degrees) from the great Japan earthquake of March 11, and were probably promoted by that event. Other earthquakes at this distance from Japan today occurred in Yemen (M 4.4), New York, Quebec and Chihuahua, Mexico today. Many of these are highly unusual and illustrate the triggering potential of the Japanese earthquake.
A moderate earthquake of M 4.5 was felt widely in central California today. NEIC reported that this earthquake of M 3.9 was felt with intensity () in California at: (2) Bakersfield, (1) California City, (2) Carson, (2) Claremont, (2) Covina, (2) Cypress, (1) El Segundo, (1) Hacienda Heights, (2) Independence, (3) Inyokern, (2) Irvine, (2) Lindsay, (3) Lone Pine, (2) Los Angeles, (2) Montclair, (2) Needles, (3) Porterville, (2) Ridgecrest, (2) Soquel, (2) Springville, (3) Tollhouse, (2) Trona, (1) Ventura, (2) Visalia, (2) Wasco, (2) Whittier and in Nevada at (1) Las Vegas.
This earthquake is the largest earthquake to occur within the State of California during the year 2011 to date. It is the largest earthquake in
the State since an M 5.5 in the Borrego Springs area on July 7, 2010 nearly a year ago. Two similar events in the state have since occurred with M 4.3-4.5 in central California south of San Francisco on January 12, 2011 and southwest of today's epicenter on February 24, 2011. It is the strongest earthquake in this region of California since an M 5.2 on October 3, 2009 and a similar M 5.2 on July 17, 2001. This has been an exceptionally quiet period in California and the geomagnetic storm over the past three days may have helped trigger today's earthquake. This is an area where geomagnetic storms and earthquakes often occur closely in time.

An earthquake of M 2.6 was felt in the State of Georgia near Mitchell today. NEIC reported that this earthquake of M 2.6 was felt with intensity () in Georgia at: (2) Atlanta, (2) Augusta, (2) Lawrenceville, (1) Marietta, (3) Mitchell and (1) Smyrna. Today's earthquake and forecast map follows. Stippled White areas are nodal distances from the M 9.0 in Japan on March 11, 2011. Where these cross seismic active areas shown in pastel boxes, promoted seismicity is possible.
