EARTHQUAKE SUMMARY FOR MAY 03, 2011
Global seismicity was at relatively quiet levels today with the only widely felt event an M 5.0-5.3 in Taiwan. On the other hand seismicity in California increased. Light to moderate earthquakes occurred from Baja to northern California. A light earthquake was also felt in northern Georgia, U.S. today with M 2.5. The current swarm near Bangor, Maine also continued today with an additional five light earthquakes in that region. An earthquake antipodal to Maine in the area south of Australia also occurred today with M 5.1. This earthquake as well as those in Maine are occurring at the fourth node (90 degrees) from the great Japan earthquake of March 11, and were probably promoted by that event. Other earthquakes at this distance from Japan today occurred in Yemen (M 4.4), New York, Quebec and Chihuahua, Mexico today. Many of these are highly unusual and illustrate the triggering potential of the Japanese earthquake.
A moderate earthquake of M 4.5 was felt widely in central California today. This earthquake is the largest earthquake to occur within the State of California during the year 2011 to date. It is the largest earthquake in
the State since an M 5.5 in the Borrego Springs area on July 7, 2010 nearly a year ago. Two similar events in the state have since occurred with M 4.3-4.5 in central California south of San Francisco on January 12, 2011 and southwest of today's epicenter on February 24, 2011. It is the strongest earthquake in this region of California since an M 5.2 on October 3, 2009 and a similar M 5.2 on July 17, 2001. This has been an exceptionally quiet period in California and the geomagnetic storm over the past three days may have helped trigger today's earthquake. This is an area where geomagnetic storms and earthquakes often occur closely in time.

An earthquake of M 2.6 was felt in the State of Georgia near Mitchell today. NEIC reported that this earthquake of M 2.6 was felt with intensity () in Georgia at: (2) Atlanta, (2) Augusta, (2) Lawrenceville, (1) Marietta, (3) Mitchell and (1) Smyrna. This is the strongest earthquake in Georgia since an M 3.2 on December 7, 2009 near this same epicenter. A similar M 4.1 hit on April 4, 2009.
