There were a number of strong signals yesterday morning indicating a trigger was in effect.

F-region ionospheric absorption was at 14MHz, typically it is 10 to 11MHz.

Also D-region absorption was high even though there were only minor C-class solar flares.

A geo-magnetic warning was issued and there was a large disruption seen on the magnetometer at the HAARP facility in Alaska.

Total-Electron-Column has been increasing globally for the last 10 days.

A southern-hemisphere coronal was earth-facing at the time of the event and solar-wind speeds took a sudden jump up about 6 hrs prior to the quake.

EARTHQUAKE SUMMARY FOR SEPTEMBER 03, 2011

The strongest geomagnetic disturbance in a month occurred today. Such strong geomagnetic disturbances are often accompanied by increased global seismicity and two days ago we issued a global seismic watch effective from September 2-7 in this summary when it was clear this geomagnetic disturbance was about to occur. The geomagnetic storm was accompanied by a series of strong and unusual earthquakes. This activity began yesterday with strong earthquakes in the Fox Islands, Aleutians (M 6.8) and under Argentina (M 6.4-6.6) and continued with events today in the South Sandwich Islands (M 6.2), south-central Chile (M 5.8-5.9) and Vanuatu (M 7.0). A pair of unusual earthquakes were also widely felt in the Tokyo, Japan region today (M 4.7-5.0). The strongest earthquake in nearly 40 years in eastern Washington State near Richland, WA shook that area today as well. More detailed discussions follow.
