Bárðarbunga Volcano Fissure Eruption

#1 Postby Hurricane_Luis » Tue Aug 19, 2014 12:53 pm

The Bardarbunga Volcano which lays under the Vatnajökull glacier has been showing signs of increased seismic activity. The Icelandic Met Office say that "Presently there are no signs of magma moving to the surface." But these earthquakes could be an early sign of an eruption.

The volcanoes summit is located just south of the 2 Green Stars.

Earthquakes continue around the Bardarbunga Volcano. The immediate area around the volcano has been evacuated.

Oh boy. Something about the Ejyafjallajokull airspace shutdown made me feel more claustrophobic than it should have.

Iceland Issues a Red Alert for the Volcano.

This means that significant ash emissions are likely. Earthquakes are continuing

At 14:10UTC the Icelandic met office said that a small lava-eruption has been detected under the Dyngjujökull glacier - a lobe of Vatnajökull.

More will posted soon.

23rd August 2014 14:10 - a small eruption under Dyngjujökull

A small lava-eruption has been detected under the Dyngjujökull glacier.
The Icelandic Coast Guard airplane TF-SIF is flying over the area with representatives from the Civil Protection and experts from the Icelandic Met Office and the Institute of Earth Sciences. Data from the equipment on board is expected later today.
Data from radars and web-cameras is being received, showing no signs of changes at the surface.
The estimate is that 150-400 meters of ice is above the area.
The aviation color code for the Bárðarbunga volcano has been changed from orange to red.
Some minutes ago (14:04), an earthquake occurred, estimated 4.5 in magnitude.

A fissure eruption has started in the early hours of the 31st August.

From the BBC News website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-29003031

Iceland has raised its aviation warning level after a fresh eruption from a fissure near the Bardarbunga volcano.

However, Iceland's Met Office described the eruption as "a very calm lava eruption" which could "hardly be seen on seismometers".

The warning means planes will be banned from flying within 6,000 feet of the volcano peak.

Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted in 2010, producing ash that disrupted air travel across Europe.

Sunday's eruption in the Holuhraun lava field area was "calm but continuous", authorities said.

It happened in roughly the same place as an earlier eruption on Friday morning, and is the third to happen in the area in the last week.

The latest eruption is more intense than Friday's with around 10 times more lava said Armann Hoskuldssonk, a geologist from the University of Iceland.

BBC transport correspondent Richard Westcott says that even if a big cloud of volcanic ash were emitted, it would not cause the same level of disruption to flights that brought Europe to a halt in 2010.

He says new equipment that airliners and engine makers have been testing would allow planes to identity and fly around ash clouds.
