I was doing alright till the first 60' oak pushed over and smashed my neighbor's house. Everyone was ok. Highest winds I have ever seen. I can't imagine staying through a larger storm.

The heavy winds came from the NE and several hours later began shifting to the SE, which I was thankful to see. I guess some people might say Gustav was a little one but I think Baton Rouge set a record today for max wind speed during a hurricane.

Gotta put some fuel in the generator.

Wow, I know I'd be scared of the storm if my neighbor's house was crushed by a tree!

Glad everyone here is alright.

That's so sad Kathy about that 27 year old! :(

I saw on the news where they were showing water spurting out of the flood walls. I'm not exactly sure where.

That might be the one CNN showed a few hours ago. I believe it's south of the 9th Ward.

The rain is about over in Lake Charles. Gustav's moving off to the north, just a weaker western feeder band near the city.

just posted this in the observations thread, but...

I just talked with a fellow S2K poster from Diamondhead (Mississippi Storm Magnet, I think his SN is) who went down to I-10/603. He said he was able to exit I-10 at 603 but not able to go south due to flooding...those gas stations just south of the interstate had about 5 feet, he said. That is north-ish of Waveland/Bay St. Louis.

His power is still out but his home is fine.

Sorry if already reported, I haven't been able to keep up with the thread all day.

Sure has some great outflow to the south since hitting land. Good thing he's not over the GOM anymore!

Hi everyone, been in and out because of my intermittent high speed internet connection in my hotel room. I don't have many reports for you, but my cousin (who stayed behind) called and said a tree fell on my aunt's house and the roof collapsed on her carport. This is in St. James Parish.
Thibodaux (where I used to live and go to school) has had quite a bit of damage, with partial roof failure on several buildings and lots of downed trees and power lines.

Looking at the local news reports for Thibodaux and Houma, it looks like they really got the brunt of Gustav's eyewall.

I hope that your aunt's house is still habitable.

Here in Pearl River, rain and winds gusting over 30mph. Electricity back on after being off most of the day. I have not had a chance to make it into Slidell to check family residence. Mandeville lakefront I have heard has several feet of water.

I'm thinking extensive rainfall here in Monroe will be possible though. Wxman57, what is your opinion? Thanks.

I'm really glad to hear all the reports of people doing fine. Keep safe while Gustav makes the rest of its course. :)

I stayed at my moms house today and they run from Slemco in South Lafayette. Still no power when I left at 7:30pm. I passed by my grandmothers house and a lot less trees down than Lili, but they did have quite a bit of tree damage and one big tree snapped but not near the house.

I passed up the apartment complex to see two bedroom windows blown out in my apartment unit. My heart dropped and then we got around and my side was fine. After a closer look all three floors windows were damaged. The first and third floor were blown out and the second has damage. I am grateful here. There could have been a lot of damage in Lafayette.

I did see downed trees, signs and street lights, but nothing that we can't get up from in a few days. The eye jogged north of us. Instead it looks like Baton Rouge got whipped. My brother made a wise choice to leave LSU and come home for the weekend.

Anyway... now we watch the storm reports. It'll be interesting tomorrow morning.

As it was said on WDSU, the levee hasn't breached, but is at risk of failing. These conflicting news reports and some lack of information can be confusing. :double:

The levee that is overtopping is a non-federal levee and was breached during Katrina. The levee has not been strengthen in years. We can't get the money for it. Our parish workers are doing their best to fortify the levee with sandbags and fill. Latest reports from home state they may have a handle on it.
