ATL: IKE Discussion

TWC just reported that the highest surge AS OF RIGHT NOW is in SWLA at 9ft.
Also, my heart sank when I read about the 22 crew freighter that the coast guard has abandoned the rescue attempt. That is another one that (duh!) should have gotten the h*** out of dodge. Why in the world did the captain keep them in that area? CRAZINESS!

I have never heard of such a large surge 12 hours prior to landfall.

Let's wait till it's over to make that statement. Katrina had a nearly 30 foot storm surge.

Who knows...maybe this storm will spark talk of changing the S-S scale some...maybe a land/wind category and a water/surge category or color code is needed after katrina's and ike's surges

Can't believe the restaurants forgot to turn off the natural gas inside before evacuating. What I don't understand is why they are leaking already?

Ike 12 hrs away from landfall. I've looked at multiple videos of katrina's surge and it looks as bad, except the videos I saw were when katrina was 1-6 hrs away from landfall.. Anybody near that coast needs to move up high or get away from it NOW if they can do so safely.

Checking in everyone. Totally exhausted from preparations. This is an amazing event for Houston-Galveston. IKE is similar to 1900, 1915, and Carla. Definitely one for the record books. Everyone be safe.
Here are some photos I sent to friends the last two days.

IKE arrives in full force later tomorrow. Still no birds today.......not a good sign. Here are some photos the day before it all goes downhill. Very similar experience to Rita so far and you have to have humour.

Day 2 of IKE preparations. Exhausted and having a glass of wine. Finished all storm preparations and helped neighbors board up. Its only 12:40PM but seems like 6PM......this has been the longest day........the longest night since Alicia 1983 to follow. Second day of being up by 4AM to check the updates and models. Once I leave the house I will VPN and use my Enbridge account from Tim's house. On the rollercoast, belted in, and going up the incline. The Houston NWS just stated we will see record tidal flooding for this area surpassing Carla in 1961. 25 years since Alicia and she sure knows how to throw and annivesary party. Anyway here some photos from this morning.

Houston chronicle reported the 10 year old child due to trimming a tree in montgommery county. Sad but one of Many to come I think.

The captain was trying to leave but had engine problems.

TWC reports that 311 service that has been providing assistance for those in evac areas and could not get out of harm's way on their own has had to stop because of weather.

Based on what I heard they were trying to get out but their engine broke down.

Thats terrible news and the hurricane still is a good way offshore along with the worst of the surge...
Waves already pilling onto the seawall, won't be long before some of this gets to the otherside of the seawall and into the city itself as the surge increases.
