You know they are taking this seriously now. Channel 11 said the sales of firearms and alcohol have been suspended!

I spoke to my sister in Humble, she says the weather hasn't gotten bad there yet, but it will soon. Also, the power was out here from about 1 am to 5 am my time.

Ask the Katrina evacuees who went to the Superdome about shelters of last resort.
My friend from Galveston says the "shelter" AKA Ball High School, it not on high ground and as he said "that area floods all the time" Great.
holy cow. Maybe it was chosen because it was the only thing capable of holding a large # of people.
Got a feeling there are going to be a lot of individual, spontaneous, "shelters of last resort" for Galvestonians.

Surfside beach and Freeport are just large sand bars, not really much to them, I used to stay at a beach house there every summer, and even then it was barely standing so I hope everyone left there.

Well, they can do what I'm doing. Sheltering in place and hoping for the best tonight. If power is off tomorrow, patch up the place as best you can, then head out of town to a city with power.
Roadways may not be open and rooms should be hard to find. (I know from experience)

UTMB can do just as well and is higher up *shrug*
edit: also I'm surprised not many are talking about Texas City, which is always going to flood and has a ton of refineries in it as well

Quick question...when power to most of Houston/Galveston gets knocked out, will the tv stations keep reporting on tv or will they go to just radios? I realize this is a fairly dumb question, but all of the hurricanes I have been through (in Mobile and MGC), I was one of the ones that lost power so I have never been able to find out!
I ask this not only for myself but for everyone outside of the area who can continue to get up-to-the-minute info on the live webfeed...

I fear a Katrina NO Superdome and Convention Center situation repeating itself, of course, I hope not.

Can i suggest something....when you're making a post and you hit submit and it shows that others have made a post during the time you were talking...if they've said the same thing you typed out...don't hit submit. I've just read the past 10 pages which could be condensed down to 5 without people posting the same thing.
If you want to chat like you've been doing in this thread, go to the chatroom. Y'all are making it ridiculously hard to find any decent information in this thread.

even those not in evac zone who left will probably be returning to no power...unless they can afford or able to stay away for possibly 1-2weeks+.

KHOU listed radio stations they're simulcasting on for people w/o tvs but they'll transmit tv as long as they can.

Recent tide gauge observations...
Sabine Pass, 7.57 feet. Extensive flooding begins in Bridge City at 6.4 feet; Sabine Pass is largely flooded at 4.9 feet.
Calcasieu Pass, 9.03 feet. Main street in Cameron begins to flood at 4.0 feet. At 9.03 feet, this is the 3rd highest level of record, behind only Rita's 15.00 foot surge and 1957's Audrey (surge around 13 feet).

The stations usually have generators and broadcast over radio.

Thats on an oil rig 300+ feet over the surface
I forgot about that, but that would still imply at least 110 at the surface as 109kts is 125mph, so I would think the winds would be strong 2/low 3 even at the surface. That is at least representative of the types of winds any skyscrapers in Houston and along the beach may receive.
The 91.4kts for several hours indicates it was damaged, but before that it was working up to 109kts so I would think that would be fairly legitimate.
