Yeah its not going to make a big difference now as the eye (at long last it has an eye!) is going to pass over the island.

The large eye will also mean the water won't funnel south out of the bay either unless Ike takes a big jog east as the southern side will have westerly winds.

Structure has slightly improved with stronger convection and a defined eye (per radar and satellite data).

For those with access to a surge map...

What does the flooding look like for Sante Fe? Have a good friend with relatives there.

Thanks in advance...

However, the government was really not very strong (especially the Galveston mayor) in their call for evac. They did change their tune later with some of the possible death and destruction statements, but by then, I think many had decided to stay. I do totally agree that people should take personal responsibility, but over and over people have shown that they want to be led around like sheep and told to leave or stay. I think all our leaders were gunshy after the Rita fiasco and were scared too many would be on the roads. This time, they erred the opposite way and it may have done so at the expense of some lives. I personally don't wait on the govt to make my decisions for me...but that's just me.

And this shelter of last resort has BAD IDEA written all over it.

Janie2006 wrote:I think the big story with Ike inevitably will be the storm surge. I've no doubt that the flooding will cause widespread damage. The wind damage is going to be spread far inland as well, expect widespread loss of power...especially with this incoming rainband.

Unbelievable! TWC showing footage of a child rescued by helicopter from a truck stranded in flood waters. People will never learn. :grr:

we also had the guy in the bear suit this afternoon on the beach in Galveston that some of us saw on tv, Texans giving Floridians a run for their money here on the darwin scale..floridians seem to like dirty flood waters though so lets see if the texans can follow suit when ike passes.

seriously, it just goes to prove even with the massive amount of warning and continuous media coverage you have a rather large amount of people no matter where they live that just don't get it. unfortunately when adults let their kids play in flood waters or don't evacuate their kids you have collateral damage and that is really sad.

I hope they back to that area to see what happened to that car when the event is over. I have a feeling that car is going to be an internets phenomenon

Per the NOAA surge maps, Sante Fe (northwest of Galveston) seems to be under the 17 to 20 feet of surge above normal tide levels zone.

That band that is just offshore is probably where the TS winds start I suspect.

Also that blow up is very impressive, if it works round to the NE side, no doubts in my mind recon finds cat-3 winds again...

Jim Cantore expects 'power-loss causing' band is about 1-2 hours offshore.

It looks like it could be undergoing serious intensification right before landfall.
I feel REALLY bad for those people staying, especially if the smaller eyewall forms, tightening it.

You're correct, KWT. Sustained winds at Galveston reported at 40 mph.
