I'm not quite sure what the survival logic of that is.

Definite strengthening before landfall, I am guessing a 115 or 120 mph storm, so definitely cat 3. Not that another 5 or 10 mph will matter much. The surge is already there.

On AVN that red is now almost a complete circle. If strengthening were to continue after the red wraps around I anticipate the eye would become rounder and the CDO would try to expand. Whether there will be enough time before landfall for all this is unknown right now.

Are people given tickets or fined when officials have to risk their own lives to save people who have been warned in advance?

My work buddy and I were just talking about that. We concur that those in mandatory evac zones should be charged for their rescue afterwards. Make it clear what the price is ahead of time, and make it like $10k and folks will evac.

Me neither, but it keeps them all together, which is comforting I guess.

FEMA & DHS stated they did not feel evacuation was effective as possible. Compare to Senator interviewed on Fox who said he is very proud of how Texans have handled this.

okay, so conditions in southwest Houston are rapidly deteriorating, although we still haven't had any rain. There's a grass fire about a half mile north of my neighborhood, and I went to the City of Houston fire department active incidents page http://cbtcws.cityofhouston.gov/ActiveIncidents/HFDIncidents.aspx and I notice there's lots of wires arcing and wires down.

I don't know how long we will have power, but at least it will be cooler once night falls.

My WeatherBug is reporting gusts to 29 miles an hour, but somehow I think it might be higher.

I will report back in an hour or so if we still have power.

Does anyone have a list of where damage reports will come in to? I have a link to Houston LSRs, but they're so much slower than news reports.

I just heard 132 counties on the Gulf Coast will feel TS-force or higher winds from Ike!
