Seriously? How much time do they have left before they're pretty much screwed. I mean, didn't they say the surge could go miles inland? If so, wouldn't that mean such a small island would pretty much be overwhelmed by the surge?

I don't think these news reporters have any idea how or when this surge will strike, and I think most of them will be caught off guard

It's downloading extremely slow. I opened another tab and am just waiting for it to download. It has been about 10 minutes and I have half a page.

Large housefire jumping from house to house on Galveston Island, per KHOU.

If there is a model run showing anything vastly different....maybe a good time to clean house or send back to drawing board

PTPatrick wrote:Sorry if its been post, BUT now 18z GFDL and HWRF are showing IKE coming in on the west end of Galveston Island and literally on top of downtown....

FROM HOU CHONICLE:Any hopes for Galveston and communities along Galveston Bay to avoid a catastrophic storm surge may well be over.

The latest model runs offer those areas little comfort. Far from bringing Ike inland to the east of Galveston Island, both the HWRF and GFDL models bring the hurricane over the island's west end.

Although this won't produce a maximum surge over Galveston Island — that would require a strike closer to Freeport — a landfall on Galveston's west end should bring enough surge to likely overtop the city's seawall. I expect it to all but destroy most non-concrete structures not behind the seawall.

The storm surge at Galveston's Pier 21 has already reached 8.5 feet this evening, and we're still probably six hours from landfall, and nearly seven hours from high tide.

The storm surge will reach maximum levels, well above 20 feet most likely, along the coast of Galveston Bay. This will especially be the case on the west and north sides of the bay.

The blame lies solely on their producers, who can feed them information about how dangerous it's getting. Or, you know, they could just find shelter now

I think the report from MSNBC Was recording hours ago because she kept saying IKE was 200 miles away? And right now it's less than a hundred. Maybe I'm watching the wrong link?

This is all I can get to load .... it shuts off right away for me. I'm imagining no power so maybe that is why?

Guy on KHOU says that the folks at San Luis Hotel are moving to the bunker. He says a cop went out a while ago and his car floated. He says NO MORE emergency folks will be out now. Says they had to sign a statement saying the hotel isnt responsible if somebody dies, and that they would not open the door once the storm starts.

I just saw her live on MSNBC. I have also seen live reports on Galveston from TWC, CNN and FOX too. Hopefully all of these reporters will stay safe!

Any reporter that is ON Galveston Island...not smart.

That would include Mr. Cantore, who is reporting from the same hotel as the MSNBC news crew. They keep on swearing that it will be safe, but we shall see. I do believe much of the island will be underwater at some point during this storm.

Reminds me of Fargo...surrounded by water...but no water pressure...large sections of downtown burned.

The Chronicle has some pretty decent pictures of the Strand District flooded out. Click on the main picture on the home page and it'll take you to the slideshow.

The San Luis Hotel on 53st @ Seawall is about 20 stories. Wind damage and flying glass are more of a concern there than flooding.

Chad Myers of CNN stated a few hours ago that he did not want to have any CNN people on Galveston island during the storm..that it was too dangerous..but he was overruled..
