Earlier today a woman was being interviewed about why she chose to stay on G.I., and she said she really wasn't worried. Said that she's 25 feet above sea level and the house is about 6 feet above that. It's an old Victorian and and three stories, and she has children and grandchildren and a number of neighbors there.
She said she was a little worried about the house fire not too far from her home. however...
This was after the fire department could no longer respond to most fires because they simply couldn't get to them. And I can do the math. Assuming that the house really is 31 feet above sea level, and she's not parroting what the realtor told her, let's just say that the surge really does come in above 20 feet and inundate most of the island. Let's also assume that 25-30 foot waves MAY top that. And let's throw in what could be 105-115 mph winds gusting to 120-130, with hurricane force winds lasting for hour after hour. Forget about the regular tide height altogether.
What does she do if her house burns down?

There were some hotel on the beach in Gulf shores in Ivan that was gutted...literally...see through to the gulf from the north side of the hotel...having said that, i am sure they will be fine. PS...EYE REALLY looking bad now. Seems to have wobbled more west on IR, or perhaps just an illusion with the wrapping.

That would include Mr. Cantore, who is reporting from the same hotel as the MSNBC news crew. They keep on swearing that it will be safe, but we shall see. I do believe much of the island will be underwater at some point during this storm.
The San Luis Hotel on 53st @ Seawall is about 20 stories. Wind damage and flying glass are more of a concern there than flooding.
If you get a 20-30 ft. surge with 30-40 ft. waves on top of that...could cause some damage to lower levels.
Also that surge and the wind for sure will blow out windows, allowing wind to get inside the building. Not sure if that would cause structural damage. I wouldn't want to be there anyways.
And of course not sure how I would feel knowing that I'm from out of town, and in the only safe building on the island, while hundreds or thousands of actual residents suffer around.
The wave can't be any taller than the depth of the water....... physics just won't allow it. If the water is 10 feet deep, the wave won't stand taller than 10 feet tall before breaking.

From the latest radar imagery, Hurricane Ike's core squall bands will spread onshore the Texas coastline between about High Island and Galveston Island during the next hour. Winds will increase with these core bands, becoming sustained at 55 to 65 mph with hurricane-force wind gusts likely. Elsewhere... rainbands will gradually become more widespread across areas from Freeport to Houston to near Port Arthur to Lake Charles. Sustained winds will increase over these areas to between 35 and 50 mph with wind gusts to 65 mph possible, especially in squalls and near the coast and bays.

but this is not new orleans...not a soup bowl...the water will rush in faster and be more turbulent with debris here...and then clear out...not trying to be morbid but...

I saw some video a few minutes ago across the seawall there, and you could tell it was still there, but you couldn't see it anymore.

Gosh, if something is so large and in demand it can't load, let's not live-link it into this forum just to prove the point!! Site may be struggling with the traffic load. Some members have already BEGGED everyone not to put in giant pictures and nested-threaded chatty posts, because they are on dialup. I've several times gotten "server not found" and I'm on medium-speed DSL. Do we REALLY need 6-deep nested running conversation on how dumb a reporter is? (I'd put up the chatty cathy pic, but don't want to waste the bandwidth.) Please, let's all be smart about the load during this event, so we can all still use the board. If you feel really, really excited, speeding, get a paper bag and breath into it, don't exhale through the keyboard!

Also on fox you can really see the huge waves crashing onto the sea wall...
KWT, glad you're hanging around late night tonight, imagine you're wanting to see Ike thru til landfall. I've really enjoyed your posts thru Ike and the rest of the season.
One Florida storm watcher that is going to be watching Ike to the bitter end. Good luck Texas and La, and anyone else around the gulf feeling the effects.
