My local station in the town I'm in had lines out to the road at 10pm (usually pretty empty) People are going crazy. Saying they heard it's going to be $5 a gallon and gas cashiers are agreeing?? I haven't heard of this but if it's the case glad I filled up just now.
No runs in south FL - but a nice spike from $3.75-$3.79 up to $3.99.
My local gas station posted the same price for all 3 grades of gasoline-in courtesy to a shortage last night-in other words-you got the best grade for the least price....that was very generous of them-if you see gas prices escalate and seem gouging-call toll free to your State Attorney General's office (toll free) immediately-this will be reported and stopped!

Is this the first US Ike-related death?

Yup, seems like us in FL still have our wits about us. Granted we might get our gas via Port Everglades that might have another route or two and don't rely totally on the Gulf coast for it.
Jumped from $3.77 to $3.99 midday though.

I think maybe the boy that died when the tree fell on him could be.

From the NHC Discussion:
IKE STILL HAS ABOUT A 6-HOUR WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY TO STRENGTHEN
INTO A 100-KT MAJOR HURRICANE. EQUALLY IMPORTANT...HOWEVER...IS THE
EFFECT THAT STRONGER WINDS ALOFT WILL HAVE ON HIGH RISE BUILDINGS.
WIND DATA FROM LAND-BASED DOPPLER RADARS AND AIRCRAFT DROPSONDES
INDICATE THAT WINDS NEAR CATEGORY 4 STRENGTH...115 KT OR 130 MPH
...EXIST JUST A FEW HUNDRED FEET ABOVE THE SURFACE. THERE COULD BE A
REPEAT OF DAMAGE TO WINDOWS IN HIGH RISE STRUCTURES SIMILAR TO WHAT
OCCURRED DURING HURRICANE ALICIA IN 1983. THE PEAK WIND SPEED AND
VARIOUS WIND RADII WERE HELD HIGHER THAN OUR INLAND WIND DECAY
MODELS ARE PREDICTING DUE TO THE MUCH LARGER SIZE OF IKE.

very unusual...only a matter of time before we find a way to get in the news here in south florida.
for people in gas panic mode....take some comfort in this report from cnn that oil prices didnt skyrocket today..
Even as Ike threatened the Gulf Coast region, oil prices remained near five-month lows, because the oil market has been fixated on the global economic slowdown chipping away at demand for pricey energy. Crude prices have fallen more than $46 from the record-high of $147.27 a barrel, set July 11.

I was curious, usually storms tend to weaken when approaching the coast but this one seems to be strengthening could a strong cat. 2 strengthening to a Cat. 3 be more damaging wind wise then a weakening Cat. 4 to strong cat. 3 making landfall? thanks.
