What prompted that? Was it because he didn't feel safe on that gazebo?

When is landfall declared? When the eyewall first touches land, or when the center of the cleared out eye touches land?

The outer and more dominant eyewall did just hit Galveston. The inner eyewall is very weak and is on the verge of collapse.

That makes you wonder if Ike will pull an Erin...

But what I don't understand is right this minute Fox news says the eye is coming over Galveston in just a few minutes--- however Geraldo is standing outside next to the beach. I thought the surge comes in just before the eye.

Jessie,

To start: The eye is not coming over Galveston for another hour or two.

Storm surge is not an all at once phenomenon. It isn't a tsunami or a wall of water, but it does come much faster than folks imagine. Its more gradual than that, topped with waves. The surge has been coming in all afternoon - at 5ish pm they had 8 feet extra of water. I'm not sure where to find current wave height data besides the ndbc, but I don't think they have many wave height meters in the bay.

Sabine Pass tide gauge registers 9.87 feet at the last update. The surge there with Rita was 9.80 feet.

LOL, if that guy thinks the eye is hitting, maybe he should consider a refresher on reading radar.

Looks to be an area of less reflectivity still after this massive band before the eyewall on radar.

Not sure. He was just doing his usual report and then suddenly he took off.

Sand hitting you at 100 mph just plain hurts. Unfortunately, sand is the least of your worries. Out in the dark, you can't see that half sheet of plywood on the wind that's just about to end your life.

TWC scored interview via phone with Mayor of Galveston. She confirmed there are 3 fires...two homes and 1 yacht basin. Water around them makes them impossible to reach.

They asked her why so many stayed and she explained that they spend the year educating people on this and with the services they provide, she couldn't say. She finished with, 'They stayed because they wanted to.'

No reports of injuries or deaths. She thinks water is 'libel to rise some more'.

Local KFDM photographer called in to KFDM 6 news from the sea wall in Port Arthur said "the water level was at the rocks" I'm not familiar with the looks of the sea wall there but she was clearly implying that it was at the top already. Meanwhile KFDM met Greg Bostwick said the peak of the surge there will be around 3am during high tide.

Here in North Beaumont the gust are starting to become more frequent and more strong, if I had to guess some gust are close 60mph. I honestly was expecting much worse by now, but know there still is a lot more stronger winds to come.

edit: added familiar *types faster than he can think*

It doesn't matter any more. Let's stick to stuff that's a little bit more important right now. A wobble isn't going to save many people from flooding at this point. A picture won't make the storm more or less impressive or powerful.

Damage and flooding reports? Eyewitness accounts? Official notices?

Hi there Sooner. Grandson in Houston is hunkered down in his attic apartment -- last cell phone call several hours ago, he said winds were really picking up at the higher levels.

Grandson with a Florida Hurricane crew is in Houma, Louisiana and last word was that wind gusts and flooding were getting really bad. I understand local levees are breached all around the Houma area. He's just 19 and this is his first such experience.

Galveston hasn't seen the real winds in that inner eye yet.
