The problem with Houston is that they've gone right through a perked up westner eywall, I'm willing to bet that western eyewlal is probablu just as strong if not stronger then the eastern eyewall over the past 2hrs.

Still this does seem to have been quite a dangerous event and we do not know just how severe situation is till we get sunrise, not long before dawn it seems.

Just saw a report out of Angleton, damage there looks minimal. They experienced the outer portion of the storm (SW quad).

I can say one thing in my "unknowing self"(Clueless), I believe that this storm will be near 20 billion in damage. If it would of went 20-30 nmi to the left then that could of been more. Again, I don't know the damage of the island or to the north...So don't read to much into this.

We will see what it did.

Also, did this hit Houston harder then Alicia?

KHOU: some fool went out during the eye with a chainsaw to cut a tree that had fallen on his home and of course cut himself, and first responders had to go to him.

I imagine so. It for sure wrecked Galveston much more than Alicia did. Alicia did not overtop the seawall.

This has already caused 7 billion in damage on the central Gulf Coast over the last 3 days so it only needs to do 20 billion to be the #2 in the US (unadjusted) ahead of Andrew.

Looks like from Galveston to houston suffering from thje heaviest rains so far, as thought the western eyewall does seem to have stronger at least in terms of rain.

I went right through the eye of Alicia in 1983. Ran to the store for ice as the eye passed. This was worse than Alicia, but I'm quite happy it wasn't as bad as it could have been if we'd gone through the eastern eyewall. The western eyewall was over us for quite a while. Will be interesting to see the wind reports. The airport next to me (Hobby) didn't report sustained hurricane force winds at any hour, just gusts to hurricane force. Hobby did report a sustained hurricane force wind in Alicia.

I'll be done with my 20-day shift as soon as the squalls let off. Now that I finally have a day off I have a hurricane aftermath to deal with. Wife reports power out (no surprise) but water pressure ok. House is ok as far as she can tell from inside.

They shouldn't have responded. Let Darwin do his deeds.

Those first responders will be incredibly busy in the upcoming days.

To be wxman57 it seems like the western eyewall was actually probably stronger then the eastern, its certainly bringing down a lot more rainfall anyway as there was a big convective burst just as it passed into the region.

I'm sure with Gaveston to Port Arthur getting pounded relentlessly by surge, this will challenge Katrina for the $ lead, due to the density of property and people.

Thanks wxman57 for the response. Glad to hear that everything is mostly ok. You need some rest!

They all run together these days.

Camille had her own year, as did Andrew, 65 Betsy , and they were spaced years apart.

We've had so many storms making landfall from Florida to Texas in the last five years, sheesh.

Recon was finding the strongest FL winds, in the NE Quad, until landfall. But they may have not been able to mix down to the ground as much, with the deepest convection in the west and south quads.

Is that what all that noise was while I was trying to sleep between 2am-5am?

I'm measuring a movement to the NNE at 15-16 kts on radar now and 23-26 kts using satellite. Looks like the top of Ike found some strong SSW winds and is separating from the bottom. Should be out of the heavy squalls here in an hour or two.

I believe Derek made a ballpark figure of around 50 billion dollars of damage but of course till we see the true extent of the damage we really can't say.

KTRK just reported that Galveston has already gotten a total of 8 inches of rain so far. And it isn't even over yet.
