I posted something similar to this in wee morning hours but i just wanted to give kudos to The Weather Channels live coverage of Ike. The were so professional with their coverage. I don't want to start any bashing of any other network but just wanted to praise TWC since they always seem to get bashed.
Thanks TWC for great coverage.

Ditto!
I'm just so afraid that one of these days, one of the Mets are going to get seriously injured or worse.

A call this morning from the grandson in Houston. He said he is still in his attic appartment in a 3-story building. Food and water gone. Major glass damage everywhere and trees down all over his area. Hoping for a Red Cross meal eventually.
Grandson in Houma is ok and ready to help with the recovery work, though areas there are flooded.

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) _ Hurricane Ike continues to keep
Galveston rescue teams from reaching at least 80 people stranded in
high waters.
City officials said early Saturday there were no reports of
deaths or injuries on the island, where Ike came ashore as a
Category 2 storm just after 2 a.m.
Rescue crews with the fire department will being responding to
dozens needing water rescues once winds drop below hurricane
strength. Police have begun patrolling the streets, city
spokeswoman Alicia Cahill said.
Cahill said some residents are calling from the upstairs of
their homes because their first floor is flooded.

Basically from Houston to Lake Charles, 6+ inches of rain so far.

Sabine Pass TX will be worse, much like Cameron LA when Rita came through. High Island is built on a salt dome, with 'decent' elevation. Sabine Pass is a bump in the marsh.

Safe and sound in Sugar Land, TX. Lost power at 9:30 last night, no trees down. A shingle is in the front yard, undetermined if it belongs to me or someone else. A small leak in the roof. Phone service functional. Powering fridge and sat TV off genset, broadband off air card. DSL is out.
It was a long night last night.

HURAKAN wrote:Ike impressed Jim Cantore. A professional that has been in so many storms is impressed by this storm. It just talks about what kind of storm Ike was.
Says it all, for its type of hurricane only really Katrina can compare, it was an awful huge surge making beast, also the winds edned up being quite strong as well, 80-100mph gusts are no walk in the park!

KWT wrote:Well this does look like its going to be a top 5 damage hurricane even adjusted for inflation I'd guess, in fact this quite possibly will beat Andrew into 3rd place you've got to think.
That would take nearly $50 billion in damage. I'd say this goes to 3rd place on the US list and 3rd or 4th on the basin-total list, around $22-28 billion ($25-32 billion including the Caribbean) depending on inland impact. Wilma currently holds 3rd place in both categories, at about $22B and $31B respectively.

I wonder how it would compare if you put the 1900 hurricane in its place last night.
