lets not forget it is only July 8th, the fact Bertha got as strong as it did at all is a heck of an achievement!

A Low with a good head start hit a belt of favorability that recently came about with the season. My first instinct is this is the result of the warm SST's from the Nina winter and maybe gw - but people will groan.

Over the next 6 weeks the basin will turn favorable.

it's interesting that as soon as a system becomes a nonthreat to the USA as Bertha has become that the overall interest level of the board drops significantly. Nonetheless there are still members that love to track systems fish or not.

The fact of the matter is that for many people, its not about the love of tracking tropical systems through the Atlantic as much as it is tracking them when they pose threats to landmasses, particularly areas with possibly melodramatic effects.

I am very happy that Bertha is as fishy as ever and is getting sheared to death. I hope it continues.

...BERTHA WEAKENS BUT STILL A CATEGORY TWO HURRICANE...

The discussion is very interesting. According to Jamie Rhome, he's set it at 90 kts but admits it may be high.

CONVENTIONAL AND MICROWAVE IMAGERY SHOW A RAPID DEGRADATION OF
BERTHA'S STRUCTURE DURING THE LAST 6 HOURS. THE EYE HAS
DISAPPEARED AND CLOUD TOPS HAVE WARMED CONSIDERABLY. THERE IS ALSO
EVIDENCE IN MICROWAVE IMAGERY THAT THE WESTERN PORTION OF THE
EYEWALL HAS ERODED.

Sorry it's not just that, she's about to get sheared to pieces...the big show is over. People make these comments every year and it's not about hoping they hit land masses. I'll take a cat 5 fish any day over a landfalling storm...it's an absolute awe of mother nature. However, I'm not going to deny the fact that when a storm threatens a land mass or the United States IT HAS MY FULL ATTENTION. I've been through hurricanes too my friend and my state, more than probably any, needs them to stay far far away.

I'm with GatorCane. She will go down as the strongest hurricane in history in July. A thing of beauty and a threat to no one.

Although I would pack some extra Dramamine if I had a trans Atlantic cruise scheduled for the next week or two :D

Amen to that.

Personally, I find every storm interesting, no matter how strong, where it hits, or what basin it's in.

I have to say, after it was clear that we had no worries of close impact from Bertha, and it looked like it wasn't going to be a danger to land (not disregarding Bermuda, but it looked pretty safe), I've enjoyed reading the discussion all the way through.
The interest (among those truly enjoying tracking and learning, it stayed high in my opinion), knowledge, curiousity, q & a's - thanks pros! as ever - has been really informative and lacked, as time went on, the rancor that often accompanies following storms here. Well done!!! May it continue like this throughout the season.

Not so interesting to me, the reasons are obvious. I am a case in point. If it threatens me or the U.S. in general, I come here to garner info from the ProMets and amateur experts to see what is really going on in real time. For me, weather is interesting......but it's not a full-time hobby of mine.

What I DO find interesting is that some of you that have taken hurricane tracking up as a hobby here (and have thousands of posts to prove it) somehow feel slighted or something because folks like me come in here only when there is a big, threatening storm. Maybe it's because of all the naive, uneducated questions or the -removed-, I don't know? But I do know that a big storm that is threatening land and property is an exciting event, good or bad. That's why people like me come out of the woodwork!

Gator, a bit of interesting medical information..

The possibility of being in a hurricane creates stress on the human body, (flee or fight) releasing a psychoactive hormone named norepinephrine (same family as epinephrine,or adrenaline)..that hormone gives the effect of a "rush".and that "rush" can be addictive..

Agreed, I think the vast majority of people on the board have interest almost exclusively when there is a threat to land, in particular; where they live.
That's why the arguing on the board the other day was so ridiculous.
Of course, people will always ask if a system is a threat to where they live and will come across as "-removed-" . Some actually are, but most just want to follow to see if there will be an disruption to their lives.

As Bertha heads out and weakens the page count here will slow to a crawl..

I think the term -removed- should be banned. It's become overused and not helpful to any discussion.

I don't quite understand the NHC's most recent forecast package showing a hurricane through the forecast period. Not doing great at the moment and surely one would think that unless conditions improve rapidly, we're looking at a rapidly weakening system.

Impressive how much the appearance has degraded in just 4 or 5 hours.
