I want to say that I don't post much at this forum since I have more questions than answers.

Sometimes the questions get answered. Sometime they're ignored.

But this is still the best damn forum for following weather systems that there is.

Anecdotal note: The gas station in Houston two blocks from my house is completely out of gasoline.

I haven't topped off yet, but I'll try tomorrow. The Korger's grocery store was almost completly out of bottled water, Maybe some expensive French water, which I don't know why anyone buys. It's water, dammit.

Now maybe everyone needs to take a deep breath and come back to reality. #1 Who knows which if any of these models are going to pan out correctly at this point. We're still at least 3 days away from a landfall anywhere on the Gulf Coast. #2 can it be a cat 4 0r 5 as shown by the "MODELS"? Sure it can but the offical forcast is for a cat 3 then perhaps shear holding it in check or even weakening it to a cat 2. And #3 if it does happen to cross Cuba and hit cat 3 or 4 status before landfall, has anyone thought of the mass coverage of potential flood and surge that will accompany this storm? Even if it should weaken after reaching a cat 4 or 5 the water that it will push with it will not decrease at the same rate of wind reduction. My overall point is, just because the center may not cross directly over you the potential for destruction is still "wide" spread. IM

West of Havana is the narrow Sierra de los Organos, rising to 70m (2161ft) and containing the Guaniguanicos hills in the west. These exotic limestone karst formation mountains have unique forest and jungle studded with caves. It is rural with a poor population differing from urban Havanans. This is in the Pinar Del Rio landfall area of the main island.

True, but its a double edged sword as caffiene can contribute to dehydration.

So buy a bunch of caffiene free coke.

Just remember regaurdless where this thing makes landfall, it will have large reaching effects across of all of Gulf Coast. Even if it hits LA, this system may stall, bringing in strong surge, rip currents,wind, and heavy rain ALL ACROSS THE GULF from TX to FL. so even if you don't get hit, you may need to prepare for 1 if not all of the events.

Now don't forget Hanna could add to all of this as well

so I emphasise to prepare, don't just look at the cone

How about sparing the talking points for someone who doesn't know what happened or who didn't read the final report issued by the government (several agencies FWIW). I'm not about to get into it, and I didn't specifically name FEMA, but they were far more disasterous than all the local officials combined. Mike Browne? Chertoff? Let's don't even start that argument. I know. I've been living the aftermath of ineptness at all levels of government since August 29, 2005. As someone way out of harm's way when the storm hit, I don't recall looking for rescue units. Would have liked to see fairer insurance settlements, better governmental responses and respect for the fact that I and about >1.5 million other displaced people are, in fact, citizens of the United States of America who play by the rules and certainly pay our fair share of taxes without asking for anything in return.

You are aware that recon is there fixing the center...right? Given the fact we have vortex messages and HDOBS to tell us where teh center is...why try to guess a movement based on a satellite loop (and one that is not the most hi-res and rapidly updating one to boot)?

For the record...since 19Z...its moved about 18 minutes north...and about 49 minutes west. Thats around a 290 heading over the last 7 hrs. Its been pretty steady too.

888mb, I believe, from Gilbert. Wilma beat it in 2005 at 882mb

Wow, I've seen people playfully wanting to take ownership of a storm for their area, but never so violently as the last couple days in here. We're all awed by the power of these storms, or we wouldn't be here, but I really don't understand the attitudes I'm seeing in here the last couple of days. After going thru Wilma's cat 1 conditions in S. Fla in 2005, and having my home JUST this month become inhabitable again from the damage she did, it just blows my mind why anyone would want a storm with Gustav's potential anywhere near their home and loved ones. I really enjoy seeing everyone's comments, the great info, the great links, everything that makes this place fun. I'm just asking as a long time user, please everyone, lets get back to the task at hand, do what we love and track these storms, help everyone that may regrettably be in the path, and take a deep breath and be respectful. Some of these posts from a select few people, are just uncalled for.

weatherguru18, in the richest and most powerful country in the face of the Earth money shouldn't be an issue when it has to be used to save a human life. It shouldn't be an issue.

Hurakan, with all due respect-we are the richest because we are a republic and a democratic one-meaning-it is all up to the individual. Thank God we arenot a Socialisr country or under aregime. The majority of persons in this country CHOOSE how and where they live. People make choices every day-how much education, what kind of job or no job etc. THe ones who cannot because of illness we do try to reach out to through social services.

Its a strange phenomena - usually referred to as -removed-. Why anyone would want a major hurricane to visit them is beyond me.

85 or 90, depending on how they interpret the flight-level winds.
