Re: Cat. 4 Hurricane Gustav in NW Caribbean Sea
Based on the VDM spots on Google earth it looks like the center that recon are fixing are not lined up with the eye we see on Sat images.

not in Mississippi or Alabama.
I can understand that, but why evacuate to an area that could just as easily get hit? If that thing swings over to Houston and a ton of folks from Louisiana have the roads congested, then evacuation for the Houston area won't be possible at all.
Most are headed for northbound interstates. They will be long gone north before Houston is evacuated. Trust me, our whole state has been made very aware of how Texas doesn't want us there. Not a problem! We do have northbound interstates and highways across our state.
My father, sister and her 4 children were bumped from their rooms at the Ramada Inn in Tyler, TX yesterday, rooms they had reserved with a credit card on Wednesday morning. The hotel has been commandeered by FEMA... to make way for New Orleans evacuees.
I'd say Texas is still being downright hospitable to LA residents, even at the expense of the safety of its own residents.

Correct. Since we see the top of the eye (at 50,000+) feet and since the satellites are above the equator, it makes the eye appear to be a a tad north of where it actually is.

Try KBYX (Key West, FL) and load up the long-range base reflectivity (BR248).
You may also want to get the tropics.zip shapefile package from the website to put the Cuban border on the display.

Beaumont has a mandatory evacuation, southerngal? I can't blame them even if it may seem just a bit premature, the taste of Rita is still in everyone's mouth! I think it is sad that Beaumont is evacuation (if true) before New Orleans. I mean sad in that New Orleans is waiting too long, just to clarify.
Of course it's true. I live here. I wouldn't lie about it. geesh

Wow, please don't be so testy. I only said the "(if true)" because I asked you for verification and obviously didn't have the answer yet. I didn't think you would lie but just wanted to verify as I have family in Beaumont and none of them have called me and given me this information yet.
Sorry... didn't mean to sound testy. I had just said there was a mandatory evac though. Like others, I guess I'm just stressed. According to officials, I should be packing to evacuate, but I personally don't think it's necessary at this time. I don't want to be a fool either... a little shift to the west and voila. I just sold my house and am at my sister's house. We have little ones to consider as well.

Someone needs to fire that AP reporter, typical AP, don't bother with facts just publish what will get attention.
The AP and ABC was reporting what the FEMA chief said. You should direct your attacks at him.

For those questioning people evacuating New Orleans to the West... look at a map. There are limited routes out. Not everyone can pile onto I-10 East or the Causeway. Many/most of those going Westward are going to turn North onto I-55 when they reach LaPlace, LA, or they may be heading to Baton Rouge or Lafayette and then North from those cities. I doubt New Orleanians are evacuating the city to stake out territory in Houma or New Iberia.

Texas is being extremely hospitable. When the federal government steps in and takes over, there's not much you can do.
Back to my point, if they ar driving west, they are probably headed to I-49, which goes up to Shreveport, then the east/west I-20 corridor. I'd rather someone be sitting in a church or school in Tyler Texas than in a city below sea level. 1000 people didn't survive last time. That's 1000 too many.
