Re: ATL IKE: Category 2 - Discussion

I posted yesterday morning that I did NOT think IKE would strengthen and here we are There were some members questioning my thoughts but like I said I just don't see IKE getting his act together prior to landfall. Possibly a CAT 3.

We should have jumped on this failure sooner. Especially after Gus.

Ike looks like a system that could blow out the eye soon however.

Galveston residents go to 47th & Broadway to be bused off the island to Austin. Residents can go to any city bus stop to end up at the collection point on Broadway.

I notice that Katy, Klein, and Cy-Fair haven't closed for tomorrow. I think this is intentional as a way to encourage people in north Houston to stay and not clog the freeway. Probably a good idea, but I sure wish they'd close. I think we'll have some major rain storms tomorrow and think of all the teen drivers on the roads. (I have one)

Not accurate information KISD is CLOSED on Friday:

http://kisdwebs.katyisd.org/Communicati ... icane.aspx

In response to the expected impact of Hurricane Ike, the following changes to the Katy ISD operational schedule have been made:

All after school activities for Thursday, September 11 have been cancelled (except for YMCA After School programs). This includes both athletic and fine arts practices and performances; after school tutorials; curriculum nights; and parent orientations

All Katy ISD schools and facilities will be closed on Friday, September 12.

All Katy ISD facilities will be closed Saturday and Sunday and all weekend activities are cancelled.

School Re-Opening

Immediately after the storm passes, Katy ISD officials will take the following actions to determine when classes will resume:

Assess every campus building and facility to ensure that they are safe for occupancy. This includes making sure utilities are on and any cleanup/repairs have been made.
Assess that roads are passable and that it is safe to get to and from school.
Ensure that district faculty and staff are ready to return.
At this time, classes are expected to resume Monday morning. Should district officials determine that further school closures are warranted, an announcement will be made through the following communication channels on Sunday afternoon:

http://www.katyisd.org
http://www.school-alerts.com (sign up ahead of time to receive alerts via e-mail)
Katy ISD school closing hotline: 281-237-0175 or 1-888-543-5473
Houston area television and radio stations

Katy needs to let the TV stations know. It's not on their website...or it wasn't 20 min ago. And don't assume that people think you mean Katy when you say KISD...Klein is also KISD.

We need to now why though before something can be jumped on. Gustav was easy, wind shear , but Ike and it's core issues seem to be a conundrum. Either Ike will have issues right up until landfall or the core will organize and intensity will increase. Can anyone say with any confidence which one is more likely?

I'm thinking the same thing David. We can't board our windows: 3 bays, and they're all recessed in brick. No wood frames to screw into for clips to grip. I figure our front rooms are hosed.

It looks like someone scalped Ike. My bet is for a borderline Cat 2/Cat 3 landfall.

Alright all remember to WoooooSaaaaah, things are liable to get a little crazy in here, but lets keep it civil.

WooooSaaahhhhhh....

Guys and girls, be sure to call your insurance companies to verify policies on cars, boats, rv's, houses... Be sure to charge your cell phone and keep them charged before the storm makes landfall. I called T-Mobile and they told me they have placed back up generators in the Houston area to keep cell phone towers up and running during and after storm.

ice is your friend, water is good, and dont forget your pets. Make sure they have food and water as well.

Other than that good luck to all!

Just got back from the pier at Pensacola Beach. The surge we are having is higher than that of Gustav already, and the waves are much bigger, some breaking 200 yards offshore and easily 20 feet, as you can see from this pic, the waves are over the pier now. Should still build but tide is going out. The island is starting to flood, I bet the road by the toll booths will be totally covered before it is all over.

This IS a big storm, this is like the surge we got from Katrina and she was alot closer to home. So even though the winds are not much, and will be easy to withstand, the surge however is going to come in angry, so beware, and do not take this storm lightly if you are in its path.

Fellow posters, in this time of crisis in which the lives of millions of people are at risk, please think before you post and try to come up with valuable information every time you decide to post something. Lets stop this back and forth that is not helping anyone, especially those in the path of Ike. If you want to talk to each other, please use the PM. Thanks.

Untrained observation...ike is not as tight looking...esp on north and west side....the other storms looked formidable on all sides...ike looks meanest on the south and east. evidence of shear?

THE NOAA AIRCRAFT REPORTED MAXIMUM FLIGHT-LEVEL WINDS OF 103 KT 100 NMI
NORTH-NORTHEAST OF THE CENTER...BUT SFMR AND DROPSONDE DATA
INDICATE THAT THE SURFACE WINDS IN THAT AREA WERE ONLY AROUND 65
KT. IN FACT...[b]THERE HAS BEEN NOTHING AT THE SURFACE RECENTLY THAT
QUITE SUPPORTS THE CURRENT 85 KT ADVISORY INTENSITY.

Technically its a Cat 1., Its been struggling to intensify the past 24 hours give or take. Lets pray that continues. No Flaming, not taking it lightly or predicting weakening.

Getting a car charger for your cell phone may be a great thing too

Mods, I know that there is an Ike prep thread, but it seems to be being used sparingly. Could we please have a thread devoted to evacuations and other info. I realize that it is very important information and needs to get out, but it is bogging the discussion thread quit a bit and most of us watching do not know anything about the zones or areas being discussed. Those to be effected would get much better info pertanent to their area if that was all being posted on a dedicated thread.

Ike is low pressure for a Category 2 hurricane. It is due to its large size. 944 mb is usually a Category 3/4 hurricane. It is larger than Katrina.
