It's odd, and must be mainly due to optical illusions so to speak, different satellite loops show different apparent directions. The NHC GOM loop you would swear it's heading for MS. But according to radar now and that loop just posted the storm looks very much on track. Just an interesting observation or maybe just the wine

check out this IR shot.... It's literally a pinpoint now.....Can that be real?

Strange location for the eye wouldn't you say??

Then it must not have an eye on IR satellite afterall, it must be just dry air, because the eye I"m seeing is a pinpoint.... Look at the link below and you tell me

Wilma was 2 miles wide!
Wilma's eye was so small, the hurricane hunter plane couldn't fit in it!

Buoy 42364 about 115 miles due north of Gustav now reporting sustained winds of 68 kt. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=42364
That indicates that Gustav has a VERY large windfield. Surge will likely be devastating.

It does have an eye, it's the big round orange thing, but the tiny blue speck is just a small area of slightly warmer cloud tops.

I think the eye warmed a bit (filled in a bit) and elongated. So, that blue speck you see is probably just a function of the color-scale used.
Okay thanx WXGuy1....Then perhaps it isn't strengthening afterall....All this time and I thought that little blue speck was the eye....

How is that when compared to the NWS radar loops?

Re: Cat 3 Hurricane Gustav in Gulf of Mexico
What appears to be a pinhole eye is actually an eye that is clouded over in all but a very small region, giving the illusion of a pinhole. Notice that the "pinhole" is not very symmetrical. Classic pinhole eyes are extremely circular and clear.

Anyone know about when we can expect the next vortex from the hurricane hunters?

Uh, it most definitely is strengthening. Just because it doesn't have a 10 foot wide eye doesn't mean it's weakening.

Sometimes I wonder about these people...
I hope this is just your sick imagination and joking (I believe you 100%, humor me)
But that entire family, including the children, deserve the Darwin Award for excellency and self ownage.
How do people like that even figure out how to have children?
Often times boats are safer than houses. If you don't live in a coastal area and haven't ever lived on a boat, don't judge.

115 seems a bit far to me, more like 85-90 at that time (1215 edt) , but yes i concur that surge will be very high , likely right near jim cantore IMO, latest radar heading a bit to the left i hope takes a little stress off those levees. You know the insurance company's are sweating big time tonite

Does anyone know what the the beam height of the radar does to the apparrent location of the eye? SAY its about 170 miles from NEW Orleans Radrad site and on a Base Reflectivity 248 NM image it is showing you the eye at about 27000 feet. When you use a program like GRLEVEL3 it always looks like it East of the Projected path. Is this the case or is it due to the angle of the beam?
