AF is operating at 3150 meters, NOAA at 2400, so no big problem.

Does seem odd if both were heading for it. The Air Force plane is still headed toward the center, but is still in the 40 knot surface wind field.

I just took a peak at the recon schedule and they are supposed to do a fix at the same time, 0Z, as the NOAA plane. Interesting.

Come on guys! LOL Planes fly near each other all the time (yes I KNOW this is a hurricane, but still)... heading in the same direction. It's called an airport! Being in Chicago I can look and see many airplanes in the sky at once and they are in no danger of hitting each other.

They will both stick to their own altitude and be just fine.

Yeah as long as they stay at seperate altitude they will be fine besides they both priobably will be a little bit apart in terms of timing.

Different altitudes - USAF at ~10k ft, NOAA at ~8k ft - I think that 2K (~ 1/2 mile) feet is plenty of separation, plus, the NOAA is going at "jet speed".

For the NOAA plane at 8,000 feet, the reduction factor is about 85%, correct?

They're certainly far enough apart, but just seems odd that both are heading for the center at the same time. I wonder if they are doing it to gets obs at different levels at the same time for research purposes. Otherwise, one could hit the center while the other flies into other areas and then swap roles.

I love how there are two planes in the hurricane at once, I haven't seen it happen for a while and asked that question back if they do this.

During Hurricane Rita on 9/22, there were 4 planes in the storm at once

1 AF
1 Navy
2 NOAA (I was on N43 that day)

Navy plane? Has that been retired or are they for backup only?
