more specifically, for Lafayette - AM 1330/KVOL - FM 99.9/KTDY should have emergency alert updates, which would hopefully include changes/problems with evac routes

You still have time to leave. Is there somewhere you can go?

I-10 Traffic

#52 Postby Evac3 » Sat Aug 30, 2008 10:11 pm

I-10 West Bound in Orange County is PACKED. When I went by, it was bumper to bumper going maybe 10-15 mph and there was a huge caravan of ambulances with lights and sirens on in the middle of them. If you are still trying to evacuate, you might wanna try a different route.

According to Mississippi Public Broadcasting, contraflow remains in effect on Interstates 55 and 59 until at least midnight on Monday. I was just listening to an interview with a representative of MDOT, and traffic is flowing at approximately 30-35 mph on those two routes. Furthermore, Interstate 10 in coastal Mississippi is heavily congested. Anyone thinking of using I-10 should consider alternate routes. This is one reason I always say that state highway maps are your true friend.

According to New Orleans media reports at about 10:30 AM CDT US 90 and virtually every LA State Road north of NO is at a dead stop.

WWL showing interstates from helicopter. Seems I-10 to I-55 toward Manchac is backed up, the I-10 contraflow, where you're forced to stay on I-10 to Baton Rouge and not get on I-55, is flowing very freely.

I-10 eastbound to Slidell has been shut down. They had been allowing evac east to Mississippi, but that is now closed, WWL is reporting. It was unclear though whether this meant just westbound. They showed traffic flowing eastward on the Twin Spans.

Rushing preparations to completion this morning. Things shutting down all over the city as people go home to prepare. Currently it's sunny with a light breeze, you would never know what is coming tomorrow morning. Completely boarded up, have two generators, lots of supplies, and all the family is here so we're as prepared as we can be. Weather service is forecasting winds to 95mph for the city of Lafayette so wish us the best! I'll try to post this afternoon and tonight while we're bracing for landfall.
