Bill now a category 3 hurricane

Hurricane Bill has weakened slightly, with maximum sustained winds near the center now at 125 mph. This makes Bill a category 3 hurricane.Bill will continue moving over warm waters, and therefore could return to category 4 status.

As of early Thursday morning Hurricane Bill was located 790 miles south-southeast of Bermuda, while continuing to move quickly off to the northwest. Bill should begin turning in a more northerly direction by later Friday.

Based on all available forecast data at this time, it appears that Bill will track west of Bermuda and east of the Eastern U.S. Coast over the next few days.

A vigorous upper-level trough now moving into the Plains and Upper Midwest, will continue to push east this weekend. This will help to deflect Bill from any U.S. or Bermuda landfall. However, regardless of a direct landfall, some impacts will be felt along the Eastern U.S. and Bermuda coasts.

Waves will become elevated today from North Carolina to central Florida as swells produced by Bill begin to reach the East Coast. Into the weekend, waves will spread northward into New England and increase in size.

For Bermuda, waves will rise through today and peak late Friday into early Saturday.

Although a direct impact to the U.S. and Bermuda is not expected at this time, this hurricane still needs to be monitored closely. Any slight deviation to the right or left of the current forecast track could greatly alter the forecasts for the Island of Bermuda or southeastern New England.

As a precaution, a hurricane or tropical storm watch could be posted for Bermuda later this morning

Does it flood up in your part of the woods so to speak? If so I wouldn't stay in the Basement. If it is a cat1-2 when it get up there. I wouldn't go to the basement. I would be watching every min of it. But being safe as I do watch it. The way the wind come at my house I can sit on my deck and be safe. Done it many times.Besafe

My husband and I went through both Hanna and Ike last fall when they hit Provo, Turks and Caicos Islands and they are both still fresh in our minds. The Islands were not prepared for either storm and had little or no notice of them, other than all the helpful and invaluable information I found here at this website (I can never thank you all enough...). So many of us on here have been through hurricanes, so we know what conditions they bring and what the aftermath is like.

I always believe in proper planning for these types of events, so went out yesterday to do some "preliminary shopping" in the rare event that Bill does knock on our door here in Coastal NE. Went to both Lowes and Home Depot....I was surprised at the lack of hurricane supplies they had in stock....3 weather radios in Lowes, none at HD and very few generators at either store. I asked staff at both stores if they were watching the path of Bill and the response I got was "it's going to hit Bermuda" No threat to here at all".

My opinion is that yes, folks are far too complacent here for these types of weather events, even tho it is hurricane season and NE can fall victim to them. I believe the last one to come close to here was back in 1985 tho I was living in the Midwest at the time.

So, the news now says the path is going to bring it closer to us on the Cape....should prove an interesting day here. We purchased a generator (sold ours when we left the Island) to avoid the last mad hour rush to get supplies. We are ready to go here....now, hopefully, it will spare us as I do not want to be called out by the RC (who by the way is watching this very closely here on the South Coast).

I live in a flood zone so my main concern at the moment is water.......
