Makes landfall as a hurricane too. First hurricane landfall in Newfoundland I believe since Michael in 2000.

It doesn't seem to be going extratropical either...could it last a while in the Atlantic as a tropical cyclone?

Looks really good for a storm at nearly 50°N latitude.

Bill is beggining to look like a comma, typical of extratropical cyclones. Bill is becoming "commatose" although I agree that looks really good to be in such a northern latitude.

No hurricane watch or warning was ever issued for Newfoundland (I would have issued a hurricane watch, but not a warning, since it could have easily weakened as forecast). The last time a hurricane made landfall unwarned was Hurricane Cindy in 2005.

This map shows that hurricane force winds are occuring in Newfoundland right now, yet there is no hurricane watch or warning out. I wonder why that is.

Environment Canada was expecting it to weaken to a tropical storm, and that seemed reasonable given the cold water but it held up well. I would have issued a hurricane watch as that was very close even based on the forecast.

Sea surface temperatures ahead of it: between 10°C and 16°C. Not warm at all.

Bill is now experiencing the force of the trough, which not only accelerates the storm northeastward but also allows the hurricane to intensify as if it were a non-tropical cyclone. This is why we have seen an increase in the intensity of the convection. Still, Bill is unlikely to increase in intensity, at least significantly.

A state of emergency has been declared for the southeast (?) coast of Newfoundland......the news just said storm surge and high tide combined will be extremely dangerous.
