Re: ATL: KARL - Hurricane - Discussion
From the looks of the latest IR image, I'd speculate that Karl is intensifying rapidly......since it is a small hurricane the chances of becoming a major have gone though the roof....could even become a Cat-4 if this trend continues all night......MGC

Code: Select all
10 Hurricane IVAN 02-24 SEP 145 910 5
11 Tropical Depression TEN 09-09 SEP 30 1013 -
12 Hurricane JEANNE 13-28 SEP 110 3
13 Hurricane KARL 16-24 SEP 120 938
If we don't count TD #10 in 2004, then Ivan-Jeanne-Karl were the last major trio. Funny enough, this year is exactly the same trio but under different names! lol

This is the area where Karl is likely headed (Courtesy Google Earth)

From the IR I think we can dispense with the disclaimer on category 3.
We should have expected this with the maintaining of form over Yucatan. Once again another explosive system that maintains over land.
West Gulf is this year's second hot spot.

It looks like Karl will make landfall in a similar location where Dean made its 2nd landfall as a category 2 hurricane, it left 12 deaths and thousands of people affected, unfortunately that part of Mexico is not as well prepared as the Yucatan cities and it's very mountainous so the mudslides are a serious problem.

I smell a special advisory instead of an intermediate, Karl is really looking great (I mean the structure is great not its possible effects).

What a wonderful season so far... Plenty of exciting storms to watch and track and no impact to the US! Wish all years were like this.

Karl could be our first retired name this year if he landfalls as a major(depending on Igor's effects on Bermuda).

Alex caused $1.8 billion in damage in NE Mexico ... good grounds for retirement

Actually I think that Alex is going to be retired, the mexican news showed really serious damages, it killed almost 30 people and it's considered one of the worst disasters in northeastern Mexico.

Of course in the 50's and 60's you can't rule out the probability of them missing a weak storm in there that would disrupt the streak.
2004 was broken by a depression though between Ivan and Jeanne.
