Could be the future Gaston. Right now Earl is the immediate concern and Fiona is somewhat of a concern.

Don't look now, but there is definitely some interesting stuff rolling off Africa. The one you see in that loop and also some more storms coming:

All it takes is for a strong ridge to get set up at the right time to allow one of these to pass west and things get interesting.

Future Gaston, maybe?

They're probably talking about it in Talking Tropics.

It's starting to get a bit off topic.

Well, I feel dumb. When I posted that link. I thought the last storm was Fiona and the one in the middle was just some kind of temporary wave!

Okay, back to the storm at hand, sorry.....didn't mean to go off tropic!

cautious. Everything depends on the speed of the storm and the speed of the trough. So we're not going to know until right before when it's too late to do anything.

unless the ridge gets eroded super-quick and Earl heads north soon. However, that would be bad news in the context of Fiona.

Doesn't have to be a direct hit to bring Virginia hurricane conditions.

For the new poster worried about Virginia, a few pages back a commenter helpfully listed probabilities of 60 MPH winds for Newport. That should help answer your question about risk.

Probabilities here. You'll have to find a city as close to you as possible on this list
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MI ... 2047.shtml

Norfolk, VA.

34 knots (39 mph) 23%
50 knots (58 mph) 8%
64 knots (74 mph) 3%

Not sure about Virginia, but I found this concerning North Carolina, hopefully this will be the only closing/evacuation needed along the east coast.

From WNCT-Greenville

Updated: August 30, 2010 - 5:41 PM

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - One national seashore in North Carolina is being evacuated ahead of Hurricane Earl, with the park closing until further notice.
Park Superintendent Russel Wilson announced in a statement Monday that Cape Lookout National Seashore is evacuating visitors and will be closed to the public starting Wednesday.
The seashore is made up of 56 miles of undeveloped beach stretching over four barrier islands about three miles off the coast of North Carolina. It is accessible only by boat.
Farther north, officials at Cape Hatteras National Seashore say they're monitoring the approach of Hurricane Earl, but haven't decided whether they'll close the park.
Earl reached Category 4 status on Monday. The latest forecasts have it brushing North Carolina's coast by Thursday or Friday.

your best bet is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. It is so much better to feel you are doing something if you go on ahead and make a list of things you may need, etc. There is a forum here for what to get, etc., put together by those that have experienced storms in the past.

viewforum.php?f=30
and here is the direct link to what you might need -

viewtopic.php?f=30&t=58904
hope this helps.

I usually just lurk but wanted to say thank you for this information. We are in Charles City, VA and probably far enough off the coast to just get hopefully some good rain which is much needed. Although Isabel did us some pretty severe damage causing us to be without power for 2 weeks. I'm just watching to see how things play out. We live in a older mobile home so of course I want to keep track of what is going on. :-)

Something always brings me to JB's post. It's basically masochism probably. Just checked his blog and he says that GFS is too far east with Earl.

He also likes the Euro for Fiona which brings a 965 hurricane into NC.

If both come true I'm sure I'll be in a rubber room somewhere.

Sometimes reading his column is like witnessing a car wreck on the highway. You know you shouldn't look, but you just have to.

Older mobile home? If I were you, I'd find a friend or neighbor in a solid house, even within your community.

ERC starting to get underway? The eyewall isn't fully closed, even if the pressure has dropped to 939mb or lower.
