I also understand the NHC is saying that just a slight deviation westward will have huge implications for the coast...
In your location, you should always have your basic hurricane preparedness kit ready in case power goes out for an extended period. Keeps you from having to wait in line for supplies after a storm. I wouldn't go out and spend any more money than you would normally would on nonperishables. Are you in an area where coastal flooding is an issue? Chances are it won't be any worse than several of the storms that have brushed by over the years, but if it is, you'll be ready.

We go outside to see the very limb we were most concerned with, sticking out of our roof. It put a 3 foot hole into my house mate's bedroom. I call first hurricane Earl related damage in MA!

Was it windy or something or did the "experts" cause the damage

Right away. They are pretty embarrassed. Crew is on the way right now. The irony!

I wouldn't be too worried. I assume she's at UNCW? I just graduated from there in May, and they're pretty good at dealing with these situations. They most likely won't be evacuating campus, and as of right now classes are on normal schedule. I wouldn't be worried at all
She should be fine driving home Friday, as the storm should be exiting the area. Worst case she'll have to wait until the afternoon.

I would have to agree with Fig. The schools in the area are experienced with these storms and determine evacuations, if needed in plenty of time. Honestly it wouldn't surprise me if they made an announcement today that they were going to cancel classes tomorrow. That was the normal procedure back in the 90s when we got all those storms. If we went under a watch or warning, class would normally be canceled the day before a strike regardless of announcing an evacuation. With Wilmington being on the southern end of the TS watch, the school may or may not do this. I am sure any announcements will be made on their web-site.
