ATL: Ex Tropical Storm EARL - Discussion

Earl is starting to look extratropical, subtropical really now, on the IR sat & rader pics. Starting to lose his heavy convection near the center, and cloud deck & rainfall expanding to the north.

As I mentioned several times this week. Storms passing more than 50 miles east of land are usually no biggie. I would expect tropical storm force winds on the Cape and not much more.

This Davis VP2 Plus @ Martins Point, NC. just north of Kills Devil Hills, NC had a gust to 68mph @ 6:33am this morning.

You said it, a gust, not sustained!

And 68 mph gusts can do some damage too. Wind damage is often done by high gusts as compared to sometimes much lower sustained winds. I've seen often even in some of our stronger t'storms, much less during TC's.
Fortunately most of NC did not see anything like this. Big bullet dodged. BTW, any reports of surge damage or major overwash?

I don't argue the fact that 68 mph gusts can do damage, I know they do. What I argue is that the graphic is wrong bc the winds being reported are lower than those shown.

Up this morning and looking at some lovely, hoped-for rain and trees swaying ever-so-gently. I looked at some of the images posted above and am still finding Earl such a puzzle. Mind you, I have already admitted to being a complete dunderhead when it comes to meteorology and hurricanes in particular, but I'm hoping for a little patience and schooling again!

Why on earth does that massive storm seem to be pretty darn close Hampton Roads VA, but the conditions are such that I've seen summer storms that were more impressive? I realize I am on the "wrong" side of the storm, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the whole thing.

I do want to say, and I hope it doesn't get me in trouble, that many of us here who love extreme weather (but know very little about it) truly enjoy listening to the discussions between those of you who are so knowledgable and the professional mets. I can honestly say that I didn't even watch the weather on television. I used Storm2k and its amazing members to guide me as I prepared for Earl. Someone mentioned earlier that Earl was/is a bit boring. I understand that statement. Of course I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt or for property to be damaged, but I would love to be able to see a beautiful and impressive hurricane blow through and shake my tree a bit! I guess it's a little bit like being a tornado-chaser. You wanna see them, you wanna get close, you want them to be awesome, but you want them to go away without hurting anyone. I don't think loving wild weather makes you suicidal or homicidal. I'm just throwing that out there.

Again, thanks to all of you. I enjoy you very much and hope I will be allowed to stick around and ask lame questions for a very long time to come.

Well, seems like the shore of RI is getting some of the outer bands already. I'm in land (East Providence) and Providence has their new Hurricane Barriers ready.

I think the hurricane center did a very good job with the Earl for our area Carteret Co NC It went farther off the coast then expected there at the end we didnt get any wind or rain a few sprinkles and maybe 15 mph winds could have got around 25 mph once or twice. Anytime there is a storm thats going to head to the OBX of NC us here in CC know we wont get more than a mullet blow. Now if a storm comes in south of us Wilmintgon or up the coast some then we will get some of the storm.

It looks like the rain is stopping here in Virginia Beach and the wind is dying down. They say sunshine for this afternoon...I hope so (since I took a personal "hurricane day") today and it would be nice to get outside and enjoy it.

Question: How long/when do you think the coastal waters will be safe enough for swimmers...how long does it normally take a storm's effects to subside on the water? Just curious (I have no intention of getting in that ocean anytime soon).

Whilst not too severe there is certainly a fair amount of rain coming into the eastern states right now, esp near the coast, so Earl is going to make for a horrible day even though the wind effects probably won't be too bad.

Earl can actually be a blessing in disguise for us with the rain. The Philadelphia area wasn't predicting much of any rain from Earl but the rain bands are certainly coming through.

So I'm up here in Nova Scotia. My question is... because in Halifax we are going to be on the eastern side of the storm if all stays the same, does this suggest we may still have hurricane force winds?

well said and i agree with you i wanted to hear the rain hit the windows of my house see the trees swaying in the wind but instead i set out on my open deck and talked to my cat who could care less about the few sprinkles that we got while setting there, i dont want anyone hurt but i do love to go to the beach see the waves the excitment of the storm the news crews coming into town and we got none of that yep im dissapointed in Earl maybe the next one will be better

I have seen my fair share of hurricanes, typhoons and tornadoes and I'm always grateful when we get less that what was called for. Even where I am at we got some welcomed rain and a nice little breeze so speaking only for myself, I'm grateful for the rain from Earl but glad he went easy on us just hope he goes easy on those still in his path. Earl showed us what he could do and he sure did a dance with all of us trying to figure out what his next step would be. Fred Astaire would be proud of his dancing abilities. lol
