PREDICT, IFEX and GRIP - why all the strange POUCH numbers

#1 Postby AJC3 » Tue Sep 14, 2010 8:15 pm

Gang,

You probably have already noticed some odd looking Atlantic POUCH designations this year, in addition to the usual 9#L INVESTS that you normally see. This is because of an ongoing field research program called the PREDICT (PRE-Depression Investigation of Cloud-systems in the Tropics) project.

Here are some links to help you better understand the project and links to meteorological data concerning these POUCHes.

Background/Methodology

Main POUCH tracking page (this is where you want to go to get the actual met data)

There are two other tropical cyclone field research studies ongoing simultaneously: The Intensity Forecasting EXperiment (IFEX), and NASA's Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) project.

Here are a couple of links for further information...

LOL - I didn't see this when posting my topic that complains about the use of the "pouch" term...

Ugh - too many strange terms for the public to deal with, IMHO...

I know academia and government like the use of acronyms (don't I know - I've had a lifetime of them), but an over-use of them can confuse the public more than anything...

you have a point Frank but the public isn't being exposed to the pouch terminology. its use is currently confined to weather-geek-land and I expect that to remain the case. even invests largely remain in the domain of weather-geek-land.

Science and its acronyms. Honestly, it's adorable.
