The million dollar question is did Richard tighten up because of land interaction or was it about to do an intensification burst?

The formation and maintaining of the eye over land would suggest intensification burst. (I think?)

Perhaps not though because it should have more IR than it does.

It appears the burst was right at landfall. The question is how strong was Richard at landfall?

That is not an 80 knot hurricane. Hurricanes at 80 knots do not have a presentation like that...but there are no reporting stations around the eye or eyewall to show otherwise.

That is the best looking 80 knot hurricane I've ever seen!

I think it reached 85 kt at some point this afternoon/evening, post analysis may confirm or deny this. Too bad the last recon couldn't sample all the quadrants.

The eye at 11pm edt was 15 miles east of belmopan...a city of 20,000 people....surely there will be some wind measures from the city or the immediate vicinity.

The NHC truly deserves props! Incredible, but true, the storm acted as well as they believed it would trackwise despite being a rarer track. Richard also showed something that has been a highlight of this season.....This has been the year of the intensifying Mexican landfallers, storms who waited to strengthen until the very last minute as they were making landfall in Mexico or very near there, Others include Alex and Karl.

:uarrow: Yeah I was thinking about how storms have intensified just before landfall although I must say that Richard made landfall in Belize not Mexico

i noticed the NHC track takes it over a pool of water under the BOC where land ends if you look at the cone. That may be a little more assistance to see if it can stay organized. I would say right now he's looking great over land so far...

Moving slowly. My guess is it creates more convection over BOC but never regains its circulation.

I think Richard was a Category 2 at landfall based on satellite images.
