Just snuck out to my local Walmart. There had been a big run on propane canisters, lanterns, flashlights, bleach, water all of which were surprising to see without watches or warnings at this point. Don't put off getting prepared or you will face a shortage of supplies.

Excellent point. But boy, when the eye did break out (in the central Gulf) it was of the donut variety (incredible).

Was at both my local Walmart and Publix earlier today. No run on either location at that time. I'm sure tonight was different--I HOPE it was!

Looks like Irene sort of trapped? See the clear area (boundries) around whole system (ridge?)
Is that why moving so slow lately?

I don't think she is "moving so slow lately". Latest imagery looks to me like she is making pretty substanitial progress in moving mainly off to the west (slight north tinge).

There's probably already a list. But just incase anyone wants some non-perishable food ideas in prep.
Honey, Salt, Sugar, Wheat, Dried Corn, Baking Soda, Instant coffee, tea, and cocoa, Non-carbonated soft drinks, White Rice, Bouillon products, Powdered milk – in nitrogen packed cans.

Re: ATL: IRENE - Hurricane - Discussion
One model run doesn't make a trend. Ah well, I'm tired of watching this tonight. If I wake up tomorrow and see people loading up on gas, I'll know the scoop. Still not terribly concerned about this as it'd have to go pretty flat WNW from where it is to get a direct hit on S. Miami, but when a storm is where this one is, August-September, I guess all of S. FL better be watching.

The strengthening has likely halted for now. Winds at the 700mb may not be as impressive as on the surface either.

It appears while the center may lose some convection, the overall system continues to get better organized. We will wake up to a much different system in the morning.
