Recon is still reporting a double wind maxium as has been the case the past couple of days. The recent history of continuous eyewall replacement cycles on hurricanes threatening land in the atlantic continues. Rita had another last night and dennis did too.

doesn't look like any good southerly inflow will help the storm for another 12-15 hours or so....then BOOM....i think tommorrow pm is when she makes everyone say "wow" i think she will RI and show her self as a truly large storm. i would say sooner but she just isn't movin that fast.
but until she gets that southerly inflow channel and moves north west from hispanola enough to establish this.(right now the southerly inflow is down sloping off 8000 foot mountains lol) ..i think she may dink around down to 965 (which is impressive in its own right!) to do this so close to hispanola or so....but .....she's got potential IMO to drop into the low 920's tommorrow nite when she bombs and gets a nice uninterrupted southerly inflow

i know this is probably not what you would look at to determine a trough or what is supposed to move Irene north and all but if you look at this loop and click the fronts box you can see the front on the east coast going flat and the one droping down in the Midwest.
is the one in the Midwest then one that will take her north?

Problem is - that map is incorrect. It associates storm surge height with a Saffir-Simpson category. That's just not the case, as we saw with recent storms (Ike, Katrina). It's the SIZE of the wind field that makes the storm surge, not the peak wind that might occur only in a small area (SS Category). So take the "Cat 3-4-5" area on that map and insert a larger Cat 1-2 (like Irene might be) and you have the resulting surge.
