A storm chaser tip: If you face directly in the wind & point your right arm straight from your side, ie 90 degrees, your hand points to the eye.

What a great quote - I never even thought about that! Bed time for me too - early start tomorrow to hit the SE coast and film some surf, preparations etc. Obviously after a huge Toyoko Inn fantastic breakfast!

This was the view outside my hotel shot by Geoff Mackley during typhoon Halong back in 2002!

Neat tip! Never really thought of it, but it makes perfect sense!

Edited to add: I am off to bed...long day of preparing for this thing and still may be more to do tomorrow. Have a good day for those just waking up on the other side of the world. Us Okinawa people need to stop checking data and GO TO BED!

(But I'll be damned if I'm not wanting to climb out of bed 25 past the hour every hour to check the satellite loops...)

Haha yes! I'm so used to typhoons veering, falling apart and pulling U-turns on me I never get my expectations up for wild conditions until the coconuts start flying! I think this will be my 21st solid tropical cyclone and it's only August 3rd so if she veers plenty more season to come! :P

But yes if a typhoon is to hit anywhere then Okinawa is the best place, far less chance of carnage and destruction compared to Philippines, Taiwan, China or Mainland Japan!

HAHA yes that would be frustrating. Doing all preparations and stuff, ready to witness the event then suddenly, everything changed. I don't remember much but isn't it you who went to Cagayan province to chase Megi last year? I saw that video posted in s2k, intense footage of the winds taken but actually the eye veered south towards Divilacan in Isabela. If Megi was caught on cam in Isabela, that should be a more intense footage!

Excited to see the footage on Muifa this time! Good luck and stay safe, James...and take care everyone in Okinawa, tomorrow will not be an ordinary day for you.

JTWC now calling for an 80 kt almost direct hit on Shanghai. That's scary.

So who agrees that the trough over the Yellow Sea is going to grab this storm and pull it north, I do realize that is kind of against what many of the agencies are showing. But it seems that it will not go as far west as china.

Trying to get some second thoughts on this.

That is a big hit for there?

I'm guessing they have dealt with a strong system before though, what history is there for such a landfall?

A few dry slots in Muifa's eye but still a very powerful typhoon,
Shanghai looks to be in the firing line too further down the line.

Stay safe people in the far east

Wow very interesting presentation, so close to Ike in terms of the multiple eyewall, looks like its tracking as expected...

Eye very apparent now on Radar Imagery out of Okinawa, also indicating the track moving due west.

don't listen to what people say - go with official sources has been my experience. Will try and watch it from here for you and if we see anything amiss will pass it along.
