Storm surge is taking it's toll on SE NC beaches. I have seen several pictures of Canal Drive on Carolina Beach completely underwater, and pictures of nothing but the dunes and the ocean (no beach) in Atlantic Beach.

For all of those still with doubts from VA north, these are observations being made 10+ hours before Irene is forecasted to make LANDFALL.

Granted, we are just past normal high tide time here, and tides have been a little higher than normal this week due to astronomical high tides, but I would guess right now water is about 2-3 feet above normal, calling for 7-9 feet or surge. Does not appear to be dropping, and we should be about a hour and a half into the ebb. Does not look good for tomorrow at all.

Great post. I think this is the very point that most people don't understand. I hope the residents near the coast don't get complacent. I'm afraid this could be bad, like Ike or Katrina.

Level with the bottom of the dock surrounding it. Maybe 12 inches from the floor. Only thing saving it from damage right now is that there are no waves on that side of the creek right now.

As expected with a large hurricane that has covered hundreds of miles. IKE was a modern day example of size vs wind when he pounded my area. Peak gust of 64MPH at the weather station here on the roof in N Galveston County but the storm surge was incredible.

I was trying to explain the surge problem to my son and I did it like this.

In the bathtub I stuck one finger in the water and twirled it around as fast as I could. I told him this was an intense hurricane with a small core. The water near my finger was moving fast, but the effect was isolated. Next I stuck my entire hand in and moved it slowly around. A lot more water moves, splashing around everywhere. This is a giant weaker storm like Ike and Irene. That surge will be big and do a LOT of damage.

To put it in perspective from other storms if the water is level with those buildings in Morehead then the flooding will be worse then Bertha, Fran, or Floyd. I worked in one of those buildings over the water for that entire period and none of them put water into the building and thats with hatches in the floor that are opened so that water can come in and anchor the building. I really hope those buildings aren't lost, as far as I know zoning won't allow for them to be rebuilt and they've been there for several decades. They've lost parts of the docks before, but it sounds like this could be a lot worse with it still several hours away

Off shore wave heights reported by TWC right in the center of the storm - 41 ft.! Further out, 25 ft. THIS is why the states are insisting on the evacuating the coastline.
